Kristin Cavallari Talks Motherhood, Work and Hosting a Stress-Free Easter with Her Kids

Kristin Cavallari is quite the young woman. A mother of two, an actress, a jewelry and fashion designer and an author, Cavallari is a celebrity who is embracing the “Maker Movement.” Not only does she have an upcoming lifestyle book, Balancing on Heels, set to release in the Spring of 2016, she also spends her time promoting her shoe line, Kristin Cavallari for Chinese Laundy, and a new jewelry line, Emerald Duv.

With so much going on, we here at Yahoo Makers wonder how Cavallari finds the time (and energy) to balance work with motherhood and the upcoming Easter holiday.

It seems this lovely lady has it all under control - from decorating Easter eggs to hosting friends and family, Cavallari manages to keep the holiday (mostly) stress-free and lots of fun.

1) Do you have any secrets to preparing the house for the family to come over on Easter?

I definitely don’t have any secrets. I think I’m similar to most people in that for any big family get-together I like the house to be clean and the kids’ toys picked up. I love having candles lit all around the house, including the bathrooms. Fresh flowers always look nice with appropriate holiday decorations.  I like getting everything ready the week before so that I’m not stressed the morning of.

2) How does your family get involved in the Easter celebration?

We decorate a couple weeks before and dye Easter eggs to get the boys excited. We talk about the Easter Bunny and use that to keep the kids on their best behavior! This year Camden helped me make bunny and egg cut outs that we hung around the house.

3) Can you think back to your first Easter as a new mom? Any anecdotes you that come to mind? What advice do you have to give now as a second time mom?

My first Easter as a new mom was surprisingly relaxed. We had some immediate family over and kept it short. I had everyone bring a dish to help me out and I didn’t stress about everything being perfect. With the babies, it’s easier to have family come to us because we’re really strict about their schedules and with naps it’s too difficult to drive around and be home in time to get them in bed. Advice as a second time mom is to do the same thing I did the first time! Keep it simple and stress-free!

4) What specifically is the most hectic moment? How do you handle it? What’s a quick example from Easters past?

My kids are so small that I think my hectic moments are ahead of me. Right now they’re  fairly easy but once they’re both running around with all of their cousins on an Easter egg hunt I’m sure I’ll be singing a different tune!

5) Is there a specific Easter tradition you have with your boys that they look forward to every year? How do the boys help decorate for Easter? Do you have a go-to craft? Any easy-to-use tools? Ones you don’t like?

The only tradition we have right now is to dye Easter eggs. This is the first year Camden actually understands what’s going on so I bought egg and bunny cut outs that we decorated. We put bows, baskets, and tails on the bunnies and drew different patterns on the eggs. No glue was involved which kept the mess down and made it easy for Cam. We also painted eggs then drew on them with chalk which was different and a lot of fun. It was definitely messy for Camden though. He was covered in paint by the time it was done!

6) Where will you be spending Easter this year? Will you be hosting? You seem like a pro but can you think back to a hosting ‘fail’?

We’ll actually be traveling home on Easter this year from a beach vacation. I have the boys’ Easter baskets all ready to go for when we return home that day. One hosting fail I had in the past was one Thanksgiving I forgot about the turkey in the oven and ended up burning it. The meat was disgustingly dry and not very good. Everyone was really sweet about it but that was definitely a fail!

7) Any keys to decorating the house and/or dressing up the kids and dog?

I keep the decorations simple and don’t get too worked up over it. I like the kids to do most of the decorations so the house never looks incredible but it’s fun for the boys and keeps it fun.

8) Do you have any Easter traditions that have been in your family for years?

Nope! We’re pretty boring. Ha!

9) We know you’re working on a new lifestyle book, Balancing on Heels. Do you get stressed around the holidays? How to manage all of your major roles? What’s the hardest part?

I do everything I can to keep stress down during the holidays. We’ve hosted Thanksgiving the past few years but I always have everyone bring something to keep my responsibilities down. It can be hard to balance everything but I just focus on my priorities. Part of not being stressed out is learning to let things go and not trying to control everything. The hardest part with balancing everything is missing my boys when I’m gone for a few days. I try to make every trip as short as possible so that I can get home to them. I’m a happier person when I’m working and have something to call my own, making me a better wife and mother, so everybody wins. I’ve just made my family my priority and if something will keep me away for more than a couple days, I either turn it down or bring the kids.
