These Human-Size Moving Hawk Wings Are Something You Need (Trust Us!)

These homemade, human-size, articulating pneumatic wings are just about the coolest creation we’ve seen all year. And what really makes our hearts soar? Maker Alexis Noriega of Etsy’s the Crooked Feather shop will craft you your own set.

The shown pair in her now-viral video will run you about $2,500. But hey, these are actual moving, human-size wings, people! Noriega, a self-taught costume and cosplay designer who specializes in wings, modeled them after hawk wings using a wire frame covered with Eurasian eagle-owl feathers and goose shoulder feathers.

The most impressive thing about them, though, is the fact that they expand and retract so realistically. The secret of the wings’ movement lies in a small paintball tank strapped to Noriega’s waist, complete with an air pressure system. Flick a switch, and out pop the wings. Listen closely to Noriega’s Facebook video and you’ll hear the pressurized air release as she operates the wings.

Adding to our amazement that anyone could actually own Noriega’s creation is that the designer has stated on Facebook that she plans to post a simple free tutorial on how to make the wings (as well as more complicated instructions that she’ll sell).

We’ll be keeping an eye out … as well as hoping that Noriega or some other incredible maker out there will come out with the 2.0 version that will actually let us fly.

In the meantime, we’ll be dreaming about our 2016 Halloween costumes, which, wow, would rule with a pair of these.
