Dad Makes 1-Acre Ice Castle With 20-Foot Slide, Tower, and a Cave

Artist Brent Christiansen did what any awesome dad who just moved his family from sunny California to snowy Utah would do: make the most of it. So he started to build a fort. Except when we say “fort,” you probably don’t picture an ice rink with a 20-foot slide, an ice cave, and a 20-foot-tall tower.

Christiansen’s kids found a more appropriate term for their dad’s creation: ice castle. Thus, an entertainment company was born.

Today there are four ice castles standing tall across the U.S. and Canada, each on an acre of land. They are the main attraction for the entertainment company Ice Castles, with Christiansen leading the creation and development of each one.

According to the company’s website, each castle weighs about 25 million pounds. The walls are 10 feet thick, and 10,000 icicles adorn the building, giving it a cavelike look. This requires major upkeep.

“We grow at least 10,000 icicles every day and place them throughout the ice castles to provide something for the water to freeze to,” Ice Castles explains. “Over time the icicles just get absorbed into the ice structure.”

The result is a beautiful structure that would bring Elsa to Frozen tears. Take a look at some of the gorgeous ice castles, or you can buy tickets to see for yourself in real life.
