10 No-Sew Clothing Hacks

Walking into a fabric store can really torturous for some non-sewers out there, including this Yahoo Makers writer. You pull and tug and pet and stroke — heads out of the gutter, please! — the bolts of fabric, dreaming of great tank tops and pencil skirts, yet that sewing machine seems like it needs an engineer to operate it.

For those like yours truly, never fear. You too can construct some cool apparel and accessories, sans sewing skills. Here are 10 hacks that look like they’re straight off the Anthropologie rack!

1. A New Neckline

This leather Peter Pan collar looks just darling when perched atop a soft blouse. Best part is you don’t need a whole lot of leather to make one. Lana Red Studio  got inspired by Love Maegan to make this cute little number.

2. Fabulous Fringe Scarf

Scarves are a popular no-sew project. For one, they make great gifts. And honestly, what else do you have to do during long winter days? This cute fleece and yarn number from It’s Always Autumn could be made with a variety of fun colors and materials.

3. Strappy Tank Top

This sexy, backless top from Trash to Couture is seriously constructed without sewing. Believe it, people. Steal one of your boyfriends old tees, and summertime here we come!

4. Shoot the Moon

Iron-on fusible tape is the best friend of all non-sewers. Mr. Kate gives a great tutorial on how to revamp an old, tired T-shirt and turn it into something surprising and fabulous! This would also look cool on an old denim jacket.

5. Cute Clutch

Seriously. No sew? DIY? This envelope-style number was designed by Melissa Esplin as a diaper changer holder, but who says you can’t toss on some strappy heels and hit the town with this baby, sans wipes? Esplin’s site gives great, detailed instructions, including a free printable template.

6. Tutu Cute!

Impress your little princess (or cowgirl) with a tutu-style skirt made from fabric scraps. Basically, just knot strips of fabric around an elastic waist band to create this full and adorable skirt. (This is the same technique used in making the traditional tulle tutus.)

7. Center Stage

Like scarves, D-ring belts are another simple project to take on. Martha Stewart gave us this DIY using velvet ribbon. Simple, understated, and so easy to make!

9. Kid Couture

This sweet frock is called a pillowcase dress, but is really made from 2 bandanas (bought at Walmart for 99 cents each!). Sure you could sew this, but why bother? Iron-on fusible web tape does the trick “sew” easy!

10. Pick Pocket

This boring T-shirt got a nice little makeover from E-how with a simple add…a patterned pocket! Best part (besides the no-sew fact) is that you can just dig through your scraps to find a piece big enough to use for this project. If you have five minutes to spare, you can make this.
