Zooey Deschanel Wears Rare All-Black Outfit at Balenciaga Show: 'Brief Goth Phase'

The actress stepped out in a sleek black blazer styled with the brand's polarizing pantaleggings — and joked about the look on Instagram

Zooey Deschanel might've had a few fans asking "who's that girl" at this weekend's Balenciaga show!

The New Girl alum, who often rocks colorful retro-inspired looks, opted for an all-black fit on Saturday for a front row appearance at Balenchiaga's fall '24 show in Los Angeles.

"Thank you for supporting my brief but much loved goth phase @balenciaga 🖤🖤🖤," the actress, 43, joked in an Instagram caption.

In the post, Deschanel showed off her full look — including a sleek black blazer, the brand's polarizing pantaleggings (which retail for a whopping $3,150), a black back and sunglasses, both Balenciaga. She accessorized with gold hoop earrings, which still complemented the all-black ensemble.

Deschanel also posed with friend Tracee Ellis Ross on Instagram, as the fellow actress also went with an all-black look that included an oversized blazer and trousers.

The black fit for Deschanel is a sharp turn from her usual style, as just a day later, the actress attended the 2023 Academy Museum Gala in a pastel blue look that fit her retro aesthetic.

For the event, she dressed in a two-piece set from the SHUSHU/TONG Fall/Winter 2023 collection “Backrooms," which featured a midi skirt, matching halter top and white ruffle and bow details. She also wore dazzling Roger Vivier shoes, a matching clutch, and accessorized with Anabela Chan and Le Vian jewelry.

Deschanel completed both looks with her gorgeous, one-of-a-kind engagement ring.

In October, the Trolls Band Together star opened up to PEOPLE about her sentimental bling, which features multicolored stones and resembles a flower crown. Her fiancé Jonathan Scott  proposed after four years of dating this past summer. "I didn't want just a diamond ring," she said. "There's just so many different beautiful gemstones. It's fun to have something different."

"I mean, I love diamonds, don't get me wrong. I'm not going to turn down a diamond," Deschanel added. "But I like the fun colors and I like pink and purple."

The actress eventually got the ring she wanted, and as Scott told PEOPLE, she actually "had mentioned it a while ago."

"So when she had mentioned that this was a ring that she liked, I immediately screen grabbed that and held onto that for a long time — probably over a year," he said. "That was the one she got."
