Zoo In Tennessee Welcomes Rare Spotless Giraffe

Bright's Zoo in Tennessee is welcoming a new baby born to the zoo, an incredibly rare spotless giraffe. The spotless giraffe was born at Brights Zoo in Limestone, Tennessee, on July 31 and the zoo says she is the only solid-colored giraffe in the world..

Giraffes are known for their distinctive coat patterns, which consist of irregular patches or spots that are unique to each individual animal. CBS News reports that the zoo's director David Bright said in an email to the news organization that "the last recorded spotless giraffe was in 1972 in Tokyo."

TikTok users refuses to believe this baby is a giraffe and @Leslie comments, "Congrats on your long horse." @Jamie adds, "It looks like a long deer!"

The zoo announced on Facebook that they will be hosting a contest to name the new baby giraffe.

The name choices are Kipekee, which means unique, Firali, which means unusual or extraordinary, Shakiri, she is most beautiful or Jamella, one of great beauty. The zoo is running the naming contest through Labor Day,  September 4, when the new name will be announced.

Baby giraffes are born at about six feet tall and they weigh between 100-150 pounds. They are also born with their distinctive coat patterns already in place. These spots help them blend into the environment and provide some camouflage from predators. It's good that this giraffe was born in captivity because it probably wouldn't survive long in the wild. Giraffes in the wild live to be about 25 years, and those born in captivity live longer due to veterinary care and protection from animals like lions and crocodiles.

It's such a beautiful animal! I think 'Spot' would have made a cute name for this rare giraffe!
