Zoo in Boston Makes Concerning Update About One of Their African Lions

Everyone is hoping he will be ok.

The Franklin Park Zoo staff recently announced that Kamaia, a 14-year-old lion, is being treated in an off-exhibit space for severe pneumonia. Kamaia, who has been experiencing a loss of appetite and exhibiting lethargy, underwent two exams that were inconclusive but made it appear that the lion does have some underlying chronic medical issues in addition to the pneumonia.

Kamaia and his brother, Dinari, have resided at Franklin Park Zoo since 2015.

Boston25 reported, "His dedicated care team has been working so hard to do everything they can to care for him and ensure that he is comfortable,” said Dr. Chris Bonar, Zoo New England Director of Animal Health. “While we are heartened by his recent improvement in activity, demeanor and appetite, his prognosis remains guarded until we see much more improvement.”

Zoo visitors are very concerned about Kamaia and are hoping for the best. "When we went to your zoo last summer, we saw him! Praying for his recovery soon. He is a handsome cat!," commented @Cherylclark. "I hope he recovers soon. My kids and I love seeing the lions. They are amazing. Get well soon, Kamaia," added @JustplainHank. @MaryBeth replied, "Keeping Kamaia and his care team in my thoughts. Rest and heal, boy."

And @CambiaJackie added, "Thank you to the Animal Care and Veterinary teams for taking such good care of Kamaia. Kamaia sending you healing thoughts and much love."

Here's hoping this beautiful cat makes a full recovery and is back to delighting zoo guests soon.
