Big Little Lies had us hooked when it first appeared on our screens all the way back in 2017. Over seasons one and two, we followed the women of Monterey, California, through some seriously *gripping* drama and, naturally, viewers are after more.
It's been over four years since season two dropped in June 2019, but will a season three finally be happening? Here's everything we know so far.
Has Big Little Lies season 3 been confirmed?
It certainly looks like it. In November 2023, series lead Nicole Kidman gave fans a promising update, while speaking at a Q&A event at the CME Group Tour Championship. "I loved Big Little Lies because it sort of came along at a time in my life when I had my children and I was thinking I was going to retire and then this situation came along, where Reese Witherspoon and I were able to produce that show. Then all of you watched it and made it a massive success," she spilled, before adding, "We will be bringing you a third one, just FYI."
And following this exciting development from Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon has since given us a new update in January 2024.
While appearing on the red carpet at the Golden Globes on 7th January 2024, Reese said in an interview with Variety she and Nicole were working on the new season.
"We are working on it. Nic [Nicole Kidman] and I have been working on it a lot." Ahhhh.
So far HBO has not commented on the future of the series.
What have the cast said about Big Little Lies season 3?
In November 2022, Zoe Kravitz told GQ she doesn't think a third season of Big Little Lies is on the cards, after the show's director Jean-Marc Vallée sadly passed away in December 2021.
"I don’t think it is [happening]," she began. "We talked about doing a season three a lot and, unfortunately, Jean-Marc Vallée, our incredible director, passed away this last year, which is heartbreaking, and I just can't imagine going on without him. He really was the visionary for that show. So, unfortunately, it's done.”
Ahead of the announcement season three was coming Nicole Kidman previously discussed a potential series 3 with SiriusXM radio host Andy Cohen while appearing on the Radio Andy show. Nicole was asked, "If you could revisit something that you've done, make a sequel of something or revisit a character that you've already played, is there one that you think ... there's more story to be told?"
Nicole was quick to bring up the HBO series, answering, "I think we'd all love to do a Big Little Lies season 3, you know?" However, she added that nothing has been confirmed, replying "I don't know" when asked whether there might be a third series.
She explained, "I know that we would, all, we all are very, very good friends and the idea of working together again. I mean, literally Laura [Dern] just texted me. And I was meant to see Reese [Witherspoon] and Laura last night, but...I was working."
Big Little Lies season 3 release date speculation
Right not there's been no official update on when we could expect a new season to arrive. Season one was originally released in February 2017, while season two came out around 16 months later in June 2019.
We now know Nicole and Reese are working on the series, but there's still potentially a lot to work out before they begin filming.
Big Little Lies season 3 cast: Who might star?
Nicole Kidman previously sounded hopeful about the prospect of a potential season three, and she hinted that other leading cast members would be up for it too.
She told Marie Claire Australia in October 2020, "Reese [Witherspoon] and I talk or text once a week. She’s just moved back to Nashville and we’re really close. We all just want to work together again. I texted Zoë [Kravitz] and Laura [Dern] and they’re in. [Writers] David [E. Kelley] and Liane [Moriarty] have a really good idea for it. Watch this space!"
Other cast members previously included Shailene Woodley, Meryl Streep and Alexander Skarsgård. Here's hoping we'll all be back in Monterey ASAP.
