Gemini is often considered the most disliked sign in the zodiac, although “most misunderstood sign” would be a more apt description — that is, until they find the right match.

Since celestial twins symbolize the sign, Gemini tends to be unfairly stereotyped as two-faced or manipulative. In reality, though, Geminis have a natural duality and an inherent ability to see both perspectives of any situation.

“They may have two sides to their personalities: One they show the world, and one they keep hidden,” says Kyle Thomas, PEOPLE’s resident celebrity astrologer. However, he says, they aren’t deceptive or disingenuous.

On the contrary, “Gemini is a master of ideas, words and connection,” says Thomas. Ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication and expression, Geminis “are gifted at being flexible and versatile in connecting with others.”

When it comes to romance, though, Geminis have a reputation for being somewhat flighty and noncommittal, says author and astrologer, Bethany Nicole. They tend to crave “change, freedom and movement,” which can make long-term relationships more challenging.

“They can suddenly lose interest in someone for no apparent reason and be on to the next person before the previous one even knows what happened,” she tells PEOPLE.

Despite this flakiness, Geminis are fun-loving and enthusiastic partners. “Gemini sees love as an exploration of themselves, others and the world,” says Thomas.

As we head into Gemini season — which usually runs from May 21 to June 20 but starts on May 20 to June 19 in 2024 — here’s everything to know about Gemini’s compatibility with other zodiac signs.

What are the key traits of Gemini?

Like most air signs, Geminis are cerebral and curious. They prefer thinking over feeling, freedom over stability.

“Gemini is a fun, flirtatious and fast-moving sign,” says Nicole, adding that they are “always up for a new idea or adventure.”

As the first air sign of the zodiac — and the third sign overall — Geminis have an especially youthful and lively spirit. They are playful, optimistic and almost childlike in their enthusiasm.

“Geminis are curious about everything,” says Thomas. “They take a highly intellectual view of the world, ready to learn about everything and everyone.”

Masterful communicators, those born under a Gemini sun sign are social butterflies who can talk to anyone. They can sometimes be perceived as superficial or inauthentic because they can easily fit in anywhere, but they are just highly adaptable.

They are also open-minded, although this can also be misunderstood. Geminis can play devil’s advocate, which can be seen as hypocritical. However, they genuinely enjoy engaging in debates as an intellectual exercise.

Rather than looking at the world as black and white, they prefer to spot for the various shades of gray. “They are able to see problems, obstacles and people from a variety of viewpoints,” says Nicole.

Because of their “charismatic and charming” demeanor, Geminis “are a source of great inspiration to those around them,” she says.

However, they can be prone to gossip, restlessness and boredom, so when it comes to relationships, “they need fast-paced partners who can keep up with them and present new ideas and adventures.”

Which signs are most compatible with Gemini?

According to Thomas, Gemini tend to get along best with fire signs (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius) and fellow air signs (Libra and Aquarius).

Astrologically speaking, fire and air signs are considered masculine elements, he explains, meaning they have a more active energy.

“They seek to learn, communicate and engage, and they’re often extroverted, highly adventurous and impulsive," he says.

Fire signs are known for being passionate and action-oriented, so Gemini will never get bored. As for air signs, Gemini will find a partner that easily understands them.

“They are able to connect on an intellectual rapport which promotes trust,” Thomas explains.

Aries

Bold, brash Aries is one of the best partners for Gemini.

“Energetically, they are a good match,” says Nicole. Both are fast-moving signs that value their independence and are likely to understand each other with ease. “They tend to process things in similar ways,” she explains, although they differ greatly when it comes to decision-making.

Aries has a take-charge personality that lends itself to strong leadership and resolution, whereas Gemini is more whimsical and indecisive. However, this can work in their favor: Gemini can help Aries become more open-minded, while Aries can motivate Gemini to “accomplish their goals.”

This pairing is “especially fun and spontaneous,” says Thomas, adding that these two can create an adventurous romance that brings “a great deal of mutual intellectual growth.”

Claire Danes, an Aries, and her Gemini husband, Hugh Dancy are a perfect example. The couple have been married since 2009 and share three children.

Leo

Another fire sign that pairs well with Gemini is Leo.

“This is one of the best matches in the zodiac,” says Thomas, adding that the relationship between these two “promotes fun, adventure and growth.”

Like Geminis, Leos are incredibly social and fun-loving. “Both like to be the life of the party,” says Nicole and “they can be drawn to each other’s vivacity and excitement.”

These signs tend to crave the spotlight, so while they can understand each other, they may also struggle with competitiveness, she adds. However, as long as support goes both ways, they “can become a real power couple.”

Libra

Geminis enjoy debate and drama, whereas Libras prefer balance and harmony, yet these two are highly compatible.

“This is a glorious match,” says Thomas. As an air sign, Libra values connection and communication as much as Gemini. Libras are just as charming and social as Geminis, so they have the potential for a “perfect long-term connection.”

These two also share an intellectual curiosity and will “always find new and interesting things to talk about and ways of looking at the world,” says Nicole. However, both can be indecisive and flighty, so a commitment may take some time.

Still, they have the potential for both friendship and romance.

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani exemplify this type of Gemini-Libra compatibility. The couple wed in 2021, seven years after they first met.

Aquarius

Gemini and Aquarius balance each other out in the best way.

According to Thomas, an Aquarius-Gemini couple is “one of the best matches in the zodiac.” Aquarius is known for being cerebral and quirky, while Gemini is playful and curious. “They both will find one another fascinating and exciting,” says Thomas.

Gemini can be restless and unpredictable, which can be difficult for certain signs. Aquarius can hold their own, though, says Nicole. “Aquarius is stoic enough not to get caught up in [Geminis drama] but adventurous and innovative enough to hold their attention," she adds.

Although it’s an air sign, Aquarius has a few earth-sign traits, Nicole explains. They provide a certain level of groundedness that’s “exactly what Gemini needs.”

Take lifelong pals Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston. The Friends costars have been real-life best friends since the '90s.

Which signs are least compatible with Gemini?

In general, Gemini is least compatible with water signs (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces) along with earth signs (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn), says Thomas.

“Air signs are highly intellectual and crave constant stimulation and engagement,” he says. Earth signs are practical and “tend to be set in their ways,” while water signs are known for being “tremendously emotional.”

Capricorn

Spontaneous, adventure-loving Gemini will likely butt heads with the rigid, responsible Capricorn.

These two are complete opposites in almost every way. “Capricorn is the sign of ‘no’ while Gemini is the sign of ‘yes,’ ” Nicole tells PEOPLE. “Gemini prefers freedom in their work environment, and Capricorn thrives in stability.”

They also differ when it comes to financial decisions and social engagements, which can take a toll on a relationship. Still, the signs can “come together and create balance,” but it takes a great deal of work.

“More often, Gemini feels tied down and misunderstood while Capricorn feels ignored and unheard," she adds.

Cancer

Watery Cancer is known for being emotional, introverted and sensitive, so it’s no surprise they’re not the best pairing for Gemini.

“This match can be particularly challenging,” says Thomas. “They have very different worldviews, particularly around the role of social versus domestic life.”

Cancers have strong ties to home and family, whereas Geminis want to explore the world, which can create a disconnect.

Although sometimes opposite signs can work well together, each providing something the other needs, that isn’t the case here.

Gemini is all about movement, adventure and logic, while Cancer prioritizes security, intuition and comfort. The restless and fast-paced Gemini “can feel like an uncontrollable force” to Cancer, Nicole says. Meanwhile, Cancer's sensitive nature can “feel like a wet blanket” to Gemini.

Pisces

Pisces is another water sign that doesn’t always mesh well with Gemini.

“Pisces and Gemini share a dualistic nature, meaning they can understand each other in a way many of the other signs do not,” says Nicole. Both signs are also “very insightful and intuitive” but have different energies.

Gemini is restless and adventurous, whereas Pisces is dreamy and peaceful. Pisceans are also one of the most emotionally deep signs in the zodiac, while Geminis are often described as superficially charming, which creates a lot of underlying tension.

While a Gemini-Pisces relationship “can start out quite fun,” the excitement doesn’t typically last.

“They will find one another a bit triggering over time,” says Thomas. “They’ll realize they have great difficulty communicating.”

What is Gemini’s compatibility with other signs?

Most of the time, couples with the same zodiac sign are well-matched. However, when two Geminis come together, it can go either way.

“On a positive note, this match can feel like a perfect flow,” says Thomas, noting that they may even feel like they’ve found their soulmate. However, one Gemini alone is a whirlwind, so together, they can become more like a hurricane.

“They can have a great deal of difficulty finding stability," he adds.

Still, Geminis are often attracted to each other like magnets. “They are likely to gravitate towards each other over and over,” Nicole says. “But it can be tough for them to make a commitment.”

Scorpio

Gemini and Scorpio are two other pairings that tend to become toxic at worst and unsustainable at best.

“There is usually a lot of initial attraction,” says Nicole, but it rarely leads to a lasting relationship. “Energetically, they have very different natures, and attempts to change the other [tend] to blow up.”

Thomas agrees, saying that although there is an instant spark between them, “more often than not, it will just create chaos.”

Sagittarius

According to Thomas, Gemini and Sagittarius is either “a perfect match or a total explosion.”

Like Gemini, Sagittarius is a mutable sign known for being free-spirited and optimistic. “These two are fast-moving and make great adventure partners,” says Nicole. “They understand each other’s need for speed and new ideas, people, places and things.”

However, both signs are known for being impulsive and non-committal, so that can lead to an on-again, off-again dynamic rather than lasting love. To make it work, these two “will need to find a way to make sure they’re on the same page,” says Thomas.
