Zoë Kravitz Makes a Case for This Unlikely Spring Trend in High Fidelity
If you, like me, just binge-watched the entire first season of Hulu’s new series High Fidelity and subsequently went down an Internet rabbit hole with the intent of figuring out how to nail the effortlessly cool style of Zoë Kravitz’s character Rob, then you’ve come to the right place. Welcome, friend. You, too, have impeccable taste in TV shows, music, and late-nineties/early-aughts fashion.
For those who haven’t yet had the privilege of watching Kravitz (a.k.a. Rob) take moody walks around Brooklyn while listening to what she would call “good music” through old-school headphones as she mulls over past loves and current relationship woes, here’s what you need to know: Rob is an objectively cool late-twenty-something who runs an impossibly large record store on Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn near her equally impossibly large apartment. But, most importantly, she’s got a great sense of style.
Her wardrobe is a mix of grungy vintage looks and reinvented trends that will instantly transport you back 1999 — despite the fact that the remake of the film by the same name (which starred John Cusack and Kravitz’s mom, Lisa Bonet, in 2000) is set in present day New York. Rob’s signature pieces include a leather duster, Neo Matrix sunglasses, vintage t-shirts, chunky boots, baggy pants, and short-sleeve button-down Hawaiian shirts.
While we could unpack each and every item Kravitz wears in the 10-episode season, the most noteworthy is, perhaps, her array of tropical-print tops. Usually associated with dads, tourists, and Trader Joe’s employees, the bold trend bubbled up in recent years thanks to proponents like Harry Styles and Justin Bieber, and now Kravitz is demonstrating how to make the controversial style look cooler than ever.
Worn underneath a long leather jacket with a mini skirt, and on top of an exposed white tank top with baggy trousers, the loud shirts suddenly feel fresh, loosely hanging from Kravitz’s frame. Blame it on her character’s unflappable attitude, the show’s head-bopping soundtrack, or the idealized Brooklyn backdrop, but after seeing Kravitz pull off countless Hawaiian shirt ensembles on screen, we’re ready to reintroduce them to our wardrobes, and with spring just around the corner, it feels like the perfect time to stock up.
