Zendaya Is Now a Shoe Designer

Zendaya Coleman, the 18-year-old actress and singer who’s probably best known for unwittingly inspiring the implosion of E!’s Fashion Police after sporting dreadlocks at the Oscars, is now adding another title to her resume: Footwear designer.

The Disney star told InStyle that she’s launching a line of shoes with her stylist, Law Roach—and the styles will cover all the bases. “We’re going to create a good sneaker, and we’re going to do a cute flat,” she said. It also sounds like they’ll be more affordable than, say, actress-turned-shoe designer Sarah Jessica Parker’s eponymous line. “My inspiration is all of the young women out there who are my age and older—working women who don’t necessarily want to spend a trillion dollars, but want to get a good shoe. I want to make affordable shoes of quality that are very fashion forward, chic, and that I’m going to wear.”

And wear them, she will: Coleman plans to debut her creations at the Met Gala May 4. (Does that mean we can expect her to wear a short dress—or pants? Hmmm…)

As far as why the duo decided to do footwear instead of… I don’t know, rompers? Crop tops?—Roach says it was the most natural thing for the shoe-crazy teen: “Everybody knows that if you bring a new shoe to an outfit, it kind of recreates it and makes it brand new all over again. We just thought that was the most exciting thing we could do—and with a little piece of her style.”

Still, it sounds like there’s still quite a few details needing to be worked out. There’s no word yet on the name of the line, price range, retail locations, or even a release date—just that the shoes should be available in time for fall. Watch this space.
