If Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid's breakup hit you hard, then prepare to have your heart broken all over again, because Malik is finally opening up about the split.

In an interview to promote his new song on On Air With Ryan Seacrest, Malik revealed that he wrote "Let Me" about his ex "seven, eight months ago," and that he had every intention of still being with the model now.

Of Hadid, Malik said, "I was in love-and I think that's pretty evident. And yeah, I was aspiring to be in love with someone for the rest of my life and the rest of theirs, as we all do. And things change and we move forward in life. Times change, but yeah, that's what I was thinking when I wrote it."

The former One Direction singer also discussed the process that goes into writing a breakup track. He said, "We go through experiences so we have memories and we have stories and things to write down and you know, contemplate and think about. You get to really put your experience into something that's going to be remembered forever."

Even though Malik and Hadid aren't together right now, hearing the singer speak about the inspiration for writing his new single suggests that there's hope of a reconciliation in the future.

In his Twitter statement regarding their breakup, Malik wrote:

"Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving and fun relationship, and I have a huge amount of respect and adoration for Gigi as a woman and a friend," Malik posted first. "She has such an incredible soul. I’m grateful to all of our fans for respecting this difficult decision and our privacy at the time, we wish this news could have come from us first. We love you all. xZ"
