The first reviews dropped for the next chapter in the Zac Snyder cinematic universe, Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire, and people have not got kind things to say.

Debuting at 9% from a total of 22 reviews, which has since risen to 17% from 24 reviews, critics have not held back in revealing what did not work for them in Snyder's upcoming film.

Hitting Netflix on December 22, Rebel Moon takes place after Kora, a stranger with a mysterious past, crash lands on a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe and begins a new life among a peaceful settlement of farmers.

Cast members include Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Jena Malone, Ed Skrein, Cary Elwes, Anthony Hopkins, Michiel Huisman, Djimon Hounsou and Cleopatra Coleman in this sci-fi action adventure flick from the director behind Justice League and Man of Steel.

Snyder's films are not always hits with critics, but he's got a loyal audience ready to defend his work. Will the fans sway the way of the critics with Rebel Moon this time? Only time will tell.

For now, here's a taste of what the critics had to say.

  • Independent (UK): It's a film populated by some of the Justice League Snyder Cut filmmaker’s worst impulses: a mess of imagery, some of it attempting to shock, congregated largely around the idea of what might look good in a trailer.

  • indieWire: A movie that feels like a million isolated storyboards without a single thing welding them together.

  • IGN Movies: Zack Snyder's space opera is let down by a derivative patchwork script, mediocre action sequences and a superficial story.

  • Daily Telegraph (UK): That even after a reported 20 years in the making the film still feels fundamentally pointless isn't just disappointing, it's entirely bewildering.

  • Above the Line: One of Snyder’s worst efforts to date ... dull and derivative, with very little to warrant there even being a Part 2, and therefore, just an atrocious waste of time and money.
