Olivia Rodrigo dropped “Vampire”—the first single off her new album GUTS—on June 30, and Twitter immediately decided it’s about her ex Zack Bia. Mostly based on lyrics like “And every girl I ever talked to told me you were bad, bad news” and “Six months of torture you sold as some forbidden paradise.”

And yeah, the situation on Twitter was basically just….

Honestly, though, some people think the song is about Olivia’s other recent ex Adam Faze:

Either way though:

In a September 2023 interview with GQ, Zack went on the record about “Vampire” and dished about his relationship with Olivia. “I don’t think it’s really about me. I think the internet just ran with it,” he first said about the track. He then went on to say he “knows how a song gets made” and he didn’t think the nature of his and Olivia’s relationship could possibly inspire the breakup anthem. “We hung out, we’re both busy, and we ended up not furthering our relationship. There was never any drama, you know?” he continued.

But the plot thickens! A source with knowledge about Olivia’s songwriting process told the same outlet they “don’t know” if Zack’s claim their separation was drama-free is “exactly true.”

FWIW, Zack actually ended up giving Olivia major props for dropping the song, adding, “The song’s so big and so awesome. Look, a heartbreak song for the summertime—it’s an undefeated formula.”

He continued, “Any time I’ve been speculatively the subject of a song, or the focus of a TikTok trend, whether grounded in reality or not, it’s, like, it’s never been up to me to address it because the scale of it is so widespread. One hundred million people have heard this song. The only thing I can address is my own life. I can control what my friends think and the creative output that I have and things like that.”

“Look, the momentum of a song is so special,” he added, complimenting Olivia’s musical chops. “I think Olivia is a generational songwriter. I think she’s a generational talent. I'm always just proud of her continued accomplishments."”

[Verse 1]
Hate to give the satisfaction asking how you’re doing now
How’s the castle built off people you pretend to care about?
Just what you wanted
Look at you, cool guy, you got it
I see the parties and the diamonds sometimes when I close my eyes
Six months of torture you sold as some forbidden paradise
I loved you truly
You gotta laugh at the stupidity

[Chorus]
’Cause I’ve made some real big mistakes
But you make the worst one look fine
I should’ve known it was strange
You only come out at night
I used to think I was smart
But you made me look so naive
The way you sold me for parts
As you sunk your teeth into me, oh
Bloodsucker, fame fucker
Bleedin’ me dry like a goddamn vampire

[Verse 2]
And every girl I ever talked to told me you were bad, bad news
You called them crazy, god, I hate the way I called them crazy too
You’re so convincing
How do you lie without flinching? (How do you lie? How do you lie? How do you lie?)
Oh, what a mesmerizing, paralyzing, fucked-up little thrill
Can’t figure out just how you do it and god knows I never will
Went for me and not her
’Cause girls your age know better

[Chorus]
I’ve made some real big mistakes
But you make the worst one look fine
I should’ve known it was strange
You only come out at night
I used to think I was smart
But you made me look so naive
The way you sold me for parts
As you sunk your teeth into me, oh
Bloodsucker, fame fucker
Bleedin’ me dry like a goddamn vampire

[Bridge]
(Ah)
You said it was true love, but wouldn’t that be hard?
You can’t love anyone ’cause that would mean you had a heart
I tried to help you out, now I know that I can’t
’Cause how you think’s the kind of thing I’ll never understand

[Chorus]
I’ve made some real big mistakes
But you make the worst one look fine
I should’ve known it was strange
You only come out at night
I used to think I was smart
But you made me look so naive
The way you sold me for parts
As you sunk your teeth into me, oh
Bloodsucker, fame fucker
Bleedin’ me dry like a goddamn vampire
