Zac Efron Is the Latest Hollywood Man to Go Platinum

He follows in the footsteps of Ansel Elgort, Justin Bieber, and many more.

Zac Efron has taken the plunge—the peroxide plunge, that is. The actor stepped out with newly platinum hair at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, yesterday, where he was promoting his new Ted Bundy film, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. His usual chestnut lengths were brightened to an icy blonde that demanded a major double-take. Gone is the star’s classic Californian surfer brah look, and in its place a style that reads more grungy skater or ’90s Versace model.

Efron’s not the only Hollywood man to go to lighter as of late: last month, Ansel Elgort also committed to the bleached look, while stars such as Adam Levine, Jared Leto, Zayn Malik, and Jared Leto have also dabbled in platinum. Like many of these men, Efron chose to keep his scruffy beard in his natural brown shade, creating a high-contrast look.

Considering the shade is one of the hardest to upkeep—regular root touch-ups and constant toning sessions to keep the hair from turning brassy are the ultimate beauty commitment—the jury is out on how long Efron will maintain it. Some may ask: is Efron’s dramatic switch-up for a new movie role? Stopping by the Variety Studio this weekend, Efron insisted it was merely a personal choice, saying, “It’s just for life, bro.” Living life to the fullest, one bleach and tone at a time.
