Yu Yu Hakusho’s Live-Action Trailer Is Out Now – Watch It Here

Yu Yu Hakusho trailer spirit gun

Yu Yu Hakusho is getting a live-action series on Netflix, and after two years of waiting since the announcement, we finally have the first trailer for the series.

Netflix released the first trailer for its live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho last night, just a week before it’s set to premiere on the streaming service. The trailer is a lengthy one, coming in at over 2 minutes in total runtime, and shows off the main character Yusuke Urameshi and the lengths he goes to during his journey.

We see Yusuke die (RIP, but necessary for the series to happen), and quickly learn that a big hole is opening up in the human world, with monsters and yokai pouring out and causing trouble. Yusuke gets asked to return to the human world as a spirit detective, where he’ll need to investigate the cause and put an end to it.

After that, we see a bit of a training montage, with Yusuke learning to use his spirit powers. That part looks a bit, well, rubbish. The effects are fine, I guess, nothing particularly beyond what Marvel movies do, but the whole thing has a bit of a Dragon Ball Evolution vibe to it.

Still, despite my concerns, we’ve seen from Netflix’s One Piece that the streaming giant can do live-action anime adaptations very well, so I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. Yu Yu Hakusho is one of the most beloved shonen anime ever, so the stakes are pretty high on this one.

Here’s how Netflix describes the series:

“After a selfless act costs him his life, teen delinquent Yusuke Urameshi is chosen as a Spirit Detective to investigate cases involving rogue yokai.”

As you’ll see in the trailer, the series will be in Japanese, though often Netflix will dub over the top of it with an English dub like it did in Squid Game, so it might be available dubbed too — we’re not sure, yet.

Netflix revealed the live-action Yu Yu Hakusho series release date in October, but now, with a week to go, we’re at the edge of our seats to see how this bold and risky project turns out.
