As soon as you get the news that a close friend or loved one is expecting a baby, an invitation to a gender reveal party may not be too far away. Along with feeling immediate excitement for the parents-to-be and speculating whether they'll be having a boy or girl, you may also be wondering exactly what the protocol for this occasion is, thinking, "Do you bring gifts to a gender reveal party?"

This party is usually held in the second trimester of pregnancy, around 18-20 weeks along. The announcement may come in the form of the parents-to-be cutting a cake, unboxing a pair of booties, or some other safe, nonexplosive way of surprising themselves and/or their guests with the news.

Unlike a baby shower, it's not expected that all parents-to-be throw a gender reveal party. They may want to keep their baby's sex a secret until it's born — or they may also reject this cultural phenomenon altogether for reinforcing an outmoded gender binary. So, because gender reveal parties aren't as widely held as baby showers are, there aren't clear gift-giving rules around them.

Luckily, this event tends to be casual, and the same goes for the gifting guidelines. Here's what you need to know about bringing a gift to a gender reveal party.

Do You Bring Gifts to a Gender Reveal Party?

In short, bringing a gift to a gender reveal party is certainly appreciated, but not required. "Gift-giving is a personal choice and so is the amount you spend on the gift," says etiquette trainer Suzy Lins. "Keep in mind that gifts don’t need to be expensive to be thoughtful."

Because the atmosphere of a gender reveal party tends to be relatively laid back, and no one (besides possibly the parents) knows what the sex of the baby is at this point, there's no need to spring for a special gift at this time. In fact, it's probably a better idea to give something to the parents instead.

"A gift to pamper the new mom through her pregnancy is thoughtful. Lotions, foot soaks, a massage roller, or rubber grip socks would be appreciated as her tummy grows," says Lins. "If you want to include the dad, a gift card to a meal delivery service would be welcomed."

And remember, the possible shower will just be a few months away, so you can save all of your cutest baby gift ideas for that occasion!
