YouTuber Reveals How Much Better You Can Get At Skiing In Three Years

How much better at skiing could you get in three years? Go from blues to double blacks? Learn a few flips?

For ski YouTuber Jacob Overmyer, three years facilitated a dramatic, inspiring improvement in his on-snow skills.

Overmyer's journey started with the purchase of his first pair of skis three years ago. Now, this season, he's somewhere in the upper echelon of skiers at any given resort, proudly holding the title of "advanced" skier.

Going from beginner to advanced in three years is a rapid amount of improvement, which, realistically, would be challenging to pull off for the average person.

Why, you ask?

You probably don't need me to tell you this, but skiing might be the most inaccessible action sport out there. Skateboarding, mountain biking, and surfing are relatively low cost once you get over the initial gear purchase hurdle (yes, this hurdle is pretty immense with mountain biking).

Skiing, in contrast, requires gas and gear expenses at a bare minimum, with additional costs like lift tickets, season passes, and avalanche training further complicating financial matters. Plus, getting a midweek ski in—unless you live within a short drive of the mountains—usually isn't as easy as, say, walking over to your local skatepark or surf spot.

I don't say all that to dissuade you from becoming the best skier on the mountain. Instead, it's to set expectations: everyone's on their own skiing journey—comparing yourself to someone else's trajectory is a waste of time.

Still, Overymyer's progress contains an important lesson. Cleary, he oriented his life in a way that allowed him to ski a lot. No matter the talent, you won't go from beginner to expert in three years if you're not putting the hours in.

And that, to me, is a fantastically simple blueprint for those hoping to reach that next level. Yes, coaching, lessons, and drills are all beneficial, but the real teacher is time.
