Your Indispensable Guide to Beach Makeup

First there was beach jewelry. This year, it’s all about beach makeup.

With sexy spring breakers filling our Instagram feeds and dolled-up Victoria’s Secret models bringing the va-va-voom to their swimsuit special, one thing’s become clear: Cosmetics are a beach-bag must-have.

When it comes to sand-and-surf friendly makeup and lotions, though, keep it simple and use the right products. “Go with products that are light, liquid, and sheer,” says makeup artist Sally Duvall. “Look for words like ‘waterproof’, ‘sheer’, ‘stain’, and ‘long-wearing’.”

Makeup artist Natasha Severino recommends “a tinted moisturizer with SPF instead of full-coverage foundation. This will give your face protection and coverage at the beach, but you won’t look made-up.” She also suggests mixing one of her favorite products, Dermalogica’s Solar Defense SPF50, with your tinted moisturizer or even just a dab of foundation.

Makeup artist Samuel Paul’s favorite tinted moisturizer is Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream, but he recommends slathering your face in Murad Oil-Free Sunscreen Broad Spectrum first.

For cheeks, stick with stains “for a freshly flushed, sun-kissed look,” says Severino. “Your face should look fresh, not overdone,” echoes Paul, who prefers a multitasking product like NARS the Multiple, a stain you can use on both your cheeks and your lids. “And a great lip tint like Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment keeps your lips hydrated with a pop of color.”

For lashes, either opt for waterproof mascara or look into getting your eyelashes tinted for the summer, says Severino.

Of course, you’ll be baring a lot of skin, so don’t forget to primp below the neck, too. Paul recommends applying your regular body lotion, then topping it with a product like Neutrogena Wet Skin Sunscreen, which will give your gams a nice glimmer.

So what should you strictly avoid ocean or poolside? “Heavy foundations – and any and all powders,” warns Duvall. “It’s the beach — embrace the shine!”
