Young student falls to his death while 'taking a selfie' at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland
A young man has died while taking a selfie at a popular cliffside tourist attraction. Irish police said the man, a foreign student in his 20s, died after falling from the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare on Friday at about 3: 15 p.m., the Irish Sun reports.
Hundreds were said to be watching as the tragedy unfolded. It’s believed he was an Indian student studying at a university in Dublin. Police told the publication the incident is being treated as a tragic accident. “Initial indications are, having taken statements from a number of people, is that the victim was taking a selfie and lost his footing,” a police spokesman told the Irish Mirror.
According to Sky News, the Doolin-based coast guard recovered the body after an alarm was sounded. Investigations are said to be ongoing as police try to contact the man’s family.
The highest point of the cliffs is said to be over 700 feet tall. The most popular tourist destination in Ireland, the cliffs attract over one million visitors each year. While the official walking trail has been deemed safe, officials have warned those visiting to steer clear of the steep edges near the paths. In 2007, a man from Hungary died while attempting to take a photograph at the cliffs.
Officials have yet to identify the young man who died.
