You Can Test Out the Man Bun for Less Than $10

Good news for bros who want to test out the man bun without committing to the arduous task of growing your long hair — or risk premature baldingGroupon is selling clip-in man buns in black, brown, or blonde. All you have to lose is $10. (Discounted 85 percent, according to the company.) The clip-in hairpiece is made of artificial hair and looks exactly like one of those faux-buns that have been marketed towards women for years, probably because it is the exact same product. Groupon appears to be in on the joke of the clip-in man bun as a gag gift, according to the product description: “This attachable — and, equally important, detachable — man bun lets you blend in with your surroundings, putting it on when you smell fair-trade coffee or hear a banjo, and taking it off when someone utters the word bro.”

The brilliant copywriters at Groupon even attached how-to instructions for those want more information before they plunk down $10 for something that looks like a nest made of synthetic fibers:

How To Wear It

  1. Comb your hair back toward the crown of your head, in a similar motion to lacquering a reclaimed-wood coffee table

  2. Attach the man bun to your natural hair the way the lay public attached itself to Arcade Fire

  3. Use bobby pins to secure the man bun, decide bobby pins are too mainstream, use antique paper clips instead

This is clearly something you buy to be ironic — I guess hipsters use Groupon ironically and not for introductory pole dance classes and burger combo meals like the rest of us? — but this might actually be a great idea for a man who doesn’t know whether he’s a man bun bro or not. According to the deal site, over 1,000 man buns have already been purchased. As pointed out by Mic earlier this year, a commitment to authentic man buns can cause traction alopecia, which is acute balding around the forehead and temples, where the hair is pulled tightly over long periods of time. Groupon also offers free returns for the clip-in man bun, just in case you’d rather use that $10 for a selfie brush.
