The Yorktown community garden is renewed with the help of volunteers
The City of York joined with Ciocca Subaru of York and the Subaru Ambassadors to highlight the Yorktown Community Garden off Kelly Drive, where residents are encouraged to pick and volunteer.
According to Tom Landis, York's supervisor of parks, the community garden was originally created in 2013 during a funded overhaul of the playground equipment. This year, the city stained the boxes, refreshed the compacted walkways and refreshed the soil at the garden behind the Yorktown Community Center.
Ciocca Subaru of York and Subaru Ambassadors, a national group of auto enthusiasts, along with Miller Plant Farm, provided the labor and the plantings to stock the garden. It was the second year that the auto group helped plant the garden.
On May 14, 2024, the groups joined York Mayor Michael Helfrich, who read a proclamation honoring the idea of community gardens and the volunteers who helped with the planting while rain began to fall on the fresh earth. Some perennials from previous years were already in full bloom.
"You don't think of this, but this is a form of recreation for all ages, not only does it beautify the park and provide food for the residents, it's also a recreational outlet for people," Landis added that in a previous year a resident told him that he had walked down to the garden to pick a tomato for his salad.
