'New York Times' Documentary "Elon Musk's Crash Course" To Investigate Tesla's Self-Driving Cars

FX on Monday revealed that its latest documentary feature, The New York Times Presents' "Elon Musk's Crash Course," is slated for premiere on May 20 at 10 p.m. PT.

The documentary, which is helmed by producer and director Emma Schwartz and features the work of The New York Times reporters Cade Metz and Neal Boudette, centers on Tesla CEO and new Twitter owner Elon Musk. The project will specifically delve into Musk's Tesla vehicles and the controversy surrounding issues with their autopilot features, in an attempt to unravel the "quixotic nature of Musk’s pursuit of self-driving technology, and the tragic results.”

“Drawing on first-hand accounts, the film traces how Autopilot has been a factor in several deaths and dozens of other accidents that Tesla has not publicly acknowledged," the official description reads. "It details pressure Elon Musk put on government officials to quash investigations and features inside stories from several former Tesla employees, who speak out against Musk for promoting a self-driving program that they believe was perilous.”

Elon Musk is the latest subject of FX's The New York Times Presents documentaries, which have previously included “The Killing of Breonna Taylor,” “Framing Britney Spears,” “Controlling Britney Spears” and “Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson.”

"Elon Musk's Crash Course" is executive produced by Ken Druckerman, Banks Tarver, Mary Robertson, Jason Stallman, Sam Dolnick, Stephanie Preiss and New York Times Presents showrunner Esther Dere. Meanwhile, Liz Day is the project's supervising producer, and Rachel Abrams serves as senior producer.
