In New York City, upscale accommodations are a dime a dozen, with every major hospitality company putting forth their best in show. But this fall, a new independent property, The Fifth Avenue Hotel, is set to invigorate the Manhattan hotel scene by breathing life into a historic property.

Set to open on Oct. 16, 2023, the hotel will combine the five-story 1907 Renaissance-style building, called The Mansion, with a new 24-floor glass tower. The older building is by legendary architecture firm McKim, Mead & White, known for many of New York City’s major landmarks, like Penn Station and The Morgan Library and Museum. The new tower, by Perkins Eastman and New York-based PBDW Architects, creates a striking juxtaposition of historic and futuristic.

“The Fifth Avenue Hotel is rich, layered, textured, and highly bespoke not only in the decor, but in the hotel experiences,” said Alex Ohebshalom, the property’s founder, in an interview with Travel + Leisure. “We take a maximalist approach in design, decor, and aesthetic, but we marry that with a very intimate, bespoke, and highly customized service offering.”

Located in Manhattan’s NoMad neighborhood at 1 West 28th Street, the property — known casually as The Fifth — will feature 153 rooms and suites by the famed Martin Brudnizki Design Studio.

“Inspired by the history of the neighborhood and heritage of the building, [Martin Brudnizki] created an aesthetic that embraces Bohemian romanticism, the glamour of the gilded age, and contemporary  intrigue,” the hotel said in a release shared with T+L.

The decor in the rooms will “showcase a whimsical and rich color palette of garden greens,  buttercup yellow, and peony pink,” according to the release, with Pagoda-style lamps, Asian-style wardrobes, Murano glass chandeliers, and even ceiling lights that twinkle. “We bring whimsy and fantasy into the overall experience to create something really special. We encourage the guests to slow down, observe, and discover,” Ohebshalom said.

A select number of rooms will have a rare city amenity: terraces. Each one features its own stunning view. The tower penthouse’s Baudelaire Suite faces Madison Square Park and the Empire State Building, while the Flâneur Suite’s wrap-around terrace traces 28th Street and Fifth Avenue, complete “with a Japanese garden with a soaking tub on one side and views looking down Fifth Avenue out across Madison Square Park and Flatiron,” the founder said.

The in-house restaurant Café Carmellini from chef Andrew Carmellini will bridge the “culinary past of New York while being firmly rooted in contemporary tastes,” the release described.

“All of the dishes are incredibly delicious and heartwarming,” Ohebshalom said, counting the lobster cannelloni and red snapper carpaccio à meunière among his favorites. “They have a beautiful presentation, but at the same time, have the warmth and care of a home-cooked meal.”

With so many delights throughout The Fifth, Ohebshalom said The Portrait Bar is “easily one of the most iconic, special, and intimate spaces New York has and will ever see by the virtue of the charm, beauty, custom millwork, and portraiture from all over the world.” Designed as a duplex with both indoor and outdoor spaces, it’s “meant to evoke a cabinet of curiosities,” he added of the “incredibly enchanting” bar.

Already a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, The Fifth's main mission is to bring a “big breath of fresh air” to the city, Ohebshalom said.

The Fifth Avenue Hotel opens on Oct. 16, with rooms from $895 a night, and you can book your room at fifthavenuehotel.com.
