New York City Center Goes Into the Woods And Out on The Town
On May 4, New York City Center held it spring gala and honored Arlene Shuler, the institution’s president of 19 years, with the Fiorello H. La Guardia Award.
Before the opening-night performance of Into the Woods, the newest production from City Center’s beloved Encores! series, guests at the Midtown Manhattan venue were welcomed by remarks from City Center’s board co-chairman Richard E. Witten and Encores! Off-Center founding artistic director Jeanine Tesori.
After the performance—from an all-star cast including Heather Headley, Neil Patrick Harris, Sara Bareilles, Denee Benton, and Shereen Pimentel, among others, and directed by Lear deBessonet—the crowd made its way to the Plaza Hotel for a seated dinner and live music; Steven Pasquale did a number from Company and the Chris Norton Band provided tunes for dancing. Spotted among the revelers were Michael Kors, Clint Ramos, Christine Schwarzman, Michael Bloomberg, Kelli O’Hara, Joel Grey, Anthony Rapp, and other notables. The evening raised close to $2 million for City Center.
