Finding a rental apartment in New York City is one of the most overwhelming, anxiety-inducing, and somehow rewarding experiences ever. Beauty editor Dianna Mazzone Singh experienced this beautiful chaos while apartment hunting with her husband, Herman, and pup, Sushi.
“We applied for the apartment before we even saw it in person (that’s how competitive the rental market was back in 2021!) and had the keys in hand within a few days,” she writes.
Their one-bedroom apartment is situated on the west side of the SoHo neighborhood, which Dianna says is called SoHo Village and was designated as a historic district in 2016. The location is quaint, Dianna’s best friend lives “literally around the corner,” and they’re near great restaurants and grocery stores.
It’s not just the neighborhood that made the couple want to sign up for the apartment before even touring it — the home itself boasts character, too. “One major perk of our apartment is its significant outdoor space,” she says. “To be able to garden, barbecue, and roast marshmallows in the middle of New York City is a privilege we don’t take for granted!”
Since moving in a year-and-a-half ago, Dianna has created spaces in their apartment that her husband lovingly describes as “related but not same-y.” There’s a through line in the home — like patterns, vibrant colors, and artwork — but in each room, there’s still “something new to be discovered,” she says.
