New York bagels are in southern Colorado

(FOUNTAIN, Colo.) — Sold-out bagels, smiling faces, and the smell of breakfast bites can all be found inside the newest business in downtown Fountain. Shannon Badgeley, the owner of Sliced, Bagels & More, recognized the need for such a business within the southern Colorado community.

“Fountain has been our home for the last 13 years, and we love the community,” Badgeley said. “They are so giving, and we decided that Fountain needed a bagel shop. We had everything else, but we didn’t have bagels, so we thought we’d bring bagels to Fountain.”

On Monday, the business officially opened its doors, seeing an unexpected outpour of both support and orders. While it was exciting, the team realized the inevitable challenges of starting a new business and spent the past couple days preparing for the future.

“It was so crazy, blew us out of the water,” Badgeley said. “The community was just so supportive, so we shut down for a few days to revamp, we’re back open today, full force, and we are ready to serve some bagels to the community.”

Before the sun had risen on Friday morning, a line had already begun to form outside of the shop. Word spread that these bagels stand out, shipped from the East Coast, and are true to the taste of a real New York bagel.

“We don’t bake them here; they wouldn’t be a New York bagel if we did,” Badgelely said. “We have them shipped in… they bake them in New York, they ship them overnight, so we do get them nice and fresh.”

It obviously raises the question, why are New York bagels so good?

Badgeley’s answered, “They are boiled in the New York water, have no idea what’s in that water, but it just makes them amazing and then they’re also hand rolled. So, each of our bagels are hand rolled and they’re so good.”

As customers approached the register, they could see the wide variety of bagel options available ranging from garlic to egg to everything and even cinnamon raisin. Aimee Brooks had a special order, picking up a mix to bring to work to surprise several co-workers for National Nurses Week.

“Just makes your morning, makes you ready,” Brooks said. “It’s warm and then the cream cheese and it just sets your day off with a good cup of coffee”

Brooks passed by the storefront on her way to work and saw the line of eager customers during the Grand Opening. Since then, she’s been keeping a close watch to make sure she could stop in to have one of these breakfast bites.

“We did see on social media that they were opening this week, so I kept in touch with them throughout the week,” Brooks said. “They were opening today and drove by and had to pop in before I headed to work today.”

Customers can order however they please, whether toasted or plain, with cream cheese or butter. However, the menu also has something special: a selection of different bagel sandwich combinations, some of which are named after family members.

“My mother-in-law, she lives in Florida, she loves tuna, so we named that one the Florida Meemaw,” Badgeley explained. “My daughter is a cop here in Fountain, so we have the Jalapeño Copper, kind of a take on the Jalapeño popper because she always makes Jalapeño poppers when we have family gatherings.”

Bagels flew off the shelves as customers continually ordered throughout the morning.

Badgeley’s daughter, Hannah Solero, picked up breakfast on Friday morning and had the chance to see her mother before the workday began.

“She’s been in the works for a while and so it’s awesome to see her finally open and like helping the community, Solero said. “It’s awesome to see the community that came in and supported us, so it’s really cool.”

Being able to open the business in Fountain, is even more meaningful for Badgeley who’s called the area home for more than a decade.

“Well, it’s special near and dear to our heart, because this is where we came when we moved here from Florida,” Badgeley said. “It just… it’s been our home, so we wanted to have a business in our community. We wanted to help and support our community.”

The business is located at 115 S Main Street in Fountain, open Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
