YKK Increases Sites with Renewable Energy

YKK Corporation now has 31 locations using renewable energy for all their electricity consumption, up from 20 sites from last year.

Under the YKK Sustainability Vision 2050—a set of sustainability goals to achieve climate neutrality by 2050—the global fastening manufacturer is working toward achieving 10 sustainable development goals (SDGs) relating to five themes: climate change, material resources, water resources, chemical management and respect people.

YKK is working to reduce corporate and supply chain greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in accordance with the Science Based Targets Initiative (STBi) certified 1.5 degree Celsius target, aiming for a 50 percent reduction in Scopes 1 and 2 and a 30 percent reduction in Scope 3 by 2030 against a 2018 baseline. As part of its measures to reduce GHG emissions, the company is increasing the use of electricity from renewable sources, with efforts such as introducing solar power facilities following the power purchase agreement (PPA) model—where a power producer installs solar power facilities on a business’ property at the power producer’s expense—at the Min Hang and Lin Gang plants of Shanghai YKK Zipper Co.

The company said it will continue to work with local communities and customers to reduce GHG emissions as well. In China, all manufacturing sites have achieved 100 percent renewable energy for purchased electricity.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recognizes manufacturing companies that demonstrate excellence in environmentally friendly activities, such as energy conservation, through its “Green Factory” certification system. YKK Zipper (Shenzhen) Co. and Shanghai YKK Zipper Co. both received the highest National Green Factory certification level in 2020 and 2022, respectively.

The company will report on fiscal year 2022 sustainability progress in the YKK Integrated Report, “This is YKK 2023,” set to be published this August.
