Gather 'round everyone who saw that photo of Kate Middleton in a car and has...questions. We finally know how it was taken. 👀 But first! Just so we're all on the same page: Kate was photographed yesterday mere hours after issuing a public apology for her photoshop scandal.

The snap in question featured the Princess of Wales driving in a car alongside Prince William with her face turned, and was initially run on UK outlets. But almost immediately, ~royal watchers~ deeply invested in the "Where Is Kate Middleton?" discourse were suspicious based on the fact that UK outlets didn't publish a previous photo of Kate in a car that was taken on March 4.

As the Daily Mail put it at the time, "the pictures were published by US gossip website TMZ but not in the UK after Kensington Palace appealed for her to be able to recuperate in private." The outlet also noted that "Kensington Palace did not comment tonight but sources stressed these were paparazzi pictures that were not authorised by the palace."

So...how did this latest Kate pic get taken and distributed? According to the Telegraph, the image was captured by two "freelance photographers" just as the Prince and Princess of Wales drove down a street near their Windsor home. The outlet also noted that Kensington Palace aides were "caught off guard."

Apparently, the "two experienced photographers" decided to "base themselves" on a street near the Windsor estate knowing William would be heading to Commonwealth Day.

"It was about 1.50pm when we saw the convoy coming towards us and we just managed to get a quick picture," one of the photographers said. "We had no idea that Kate was even in the car with him until we looked at it. It was pure luck."

As the Telegraph put it, the photographers "managed to achieve what the Princess herself had been aiming for with her own image—to prove that she was alive and well."
