Let's face it, 2023 has been brutal when it comes to canceled television shows. Raise a glass (and wipe away tears) for all the shows we've lost so far. Specifically, the shows that were canceled, canceled. Not renewed for a final season that aired in 2023. While they also ended this year, I don't consider shows like Sex Education, Riverdale, Ted Lasso, The Flash, and Succession to have been canceled per se because we at least had some warning. Nothing is worse than waiting with bated breath to find out if your show is coming back and getting that bad news.
A lot of television is up in the air due to the WGA strike this summer and the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Obviously, I'm not going to blame the actors and writers for any shows that got lost in the shuffle. I'd rather television shows get made with fair contracts and adequate compensation. But that doesn't mean we can't be upset! If anything, it makes me even angrier at the networks for not playing nice or having faith in some seriously good shows.
A League of Their Own
This one hurt more than most because it was canceled then uncanceled and then canceled again. And part of me still feels like it could come back! That type of whiplash brings out the delusions.
Gossip Girl
The HBO reboot, that is. It only lasted two seasons, compared to the original series' six.
The Company You Keep
NOOOOOOOOO *deep breath* NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! I will never, ever, ever be over this cancelation. It's an instant "gone too soon" for me. Goodbye, my little con artists.
Blindspotting
Gonna be forever mad about this one too, NGL. The Starz series, which spun-off a film by the same name, was funny and magical and touching in all the right ways.
Heels
Starz also took Stephen Amell's wrestling series from us... rude.
How I Met Your Father
How am I going to find out who the father is if you cancel the show, HULU?????? You had one job.
Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies
Since when has a show with singing and dancing teenagers flopped? That should be a recipe for success, no questions asked.
The Goldbergs
Did you see this one coming? I didn't. It was around for so long and then, poof: gone!
Doom Patrol
Who even knows what DC is up to anymore? I know there's still the Harley Quinn show and Peacekeeper but... Doom Patrol was so fun.
The Winchesters
I'm honestly shocked that The CW didn't jump at the chance to keep Supernatural going even longer. What even is The CW without it??
Ziwe
Let Ziwe take over one of the late-night shows, cowards!!
The Resident
Milo Ventimiglia isn't the only former Gilmore Girls boy whose new show got canceled this year. (Technically, if you include The Winchesters, it's been a rough year for Team Jess, Team Logan, and Team Dean.)
The Other Two
At least The Other Two had a pretty perfect finale. I'm sad but okay with the ending it got.
Grand Crew
This is supremely unfair. Grand Crew was a return to form for NBC sitcoms. It should have had so many seasons people were like "Grand Crew?? Is that still on?"
Avenue 5
HBO Max has taken so much from us.
NCIS: LA
Dang! This show was an institution. Be gentle when you break this to your parents.
Willow
Not only did Disney+ brutally cancel this delightful series, but they also pulled it from the streaming service. You can't even go back and watch it! What gives??
Reservation Dogs
Why does it feel like shows can't get more than 3-4 seasons these days? Reservation Dogs was the type of show that deserved to have a season 5 everyone hated, a season 6 that won everyone back, and a season 7 that wrapped everything up.
The Great
The last season was kind of a bummer because, well, that happened. But I would have kept watching like a loyal little peasant regardless.
Reboot
This sitcom about a sitcom was double the funny.
Vampire Academy
I hate it when a book series adaptation doesn't get to even, like, finish the story. Don't you?
