Yes, Monsta X Actually Spends $27K a Month on Food

In an interview two years ago, South Korean boy band—or, “boy group,” because ‘90s alliteration is dead—Monsta X let slip their monthly food spending, a line item totaling $27,000. Yes, together, group members Shownu, Minhyuk, Kihyun, Hyungwon, Joohoney and I.M all consume $27,000 worth of mostly lunch and dinner (many skip breakfast) every month.

“Of course, with workout,” the group told Men’s Health in a recent interview, where they responded to internet reactions, including memes about their spending habits. (For the record, they don’t spend $27,000 every single month on food. For the record, they spend $27,000 most months.)

The group said they weight train daily—their choreography practice also helping work off their calorie intake. The group is relatively new as bands go, but relatively established as far as K-pop groups. Monster X formed in 2014 through a Korean reality TV program. Last year, the group released their first English-language album—their sixth studio album—featuring the group’s unique mix of electric pop and hip-hop.

“People tend to say that Monsta X’s style is more mature or sexy,” explains I.M. The group envisions itself as a bit edgier than other K-pop groups.

Though, group mates were quick to point to Joohoney’s “aegyo”—a cuter affectation associated with both male and female K-pop stars—as a more fluid exception. “Use it,” Joohoney tells us, laughing. Cute, edgy, calorie-heavy …. Nothing’s off brand.
