Yes, even amateur bakers can make this impressive homemade chocolate babka

Making chocolate babka from scratch is even more delicious than buying it from a bakery. The braided cake can be a challenging recipe, yet baking it right is extremely rewarding. In this episode of ITK: Eats, we show you an easy-to-follow recipe to test your baking skills and create your own chocolate babka. Watch the video below for a primer.

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

  • ½ tablespoon instant dry yeast

  • ½ teaspoon sea salt

  • 2 large eggs, beaten

  • ¼ cup water

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened

For the chocolate filling:

  • 3½ ounces bittersweet chocolate

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream

  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

  • ¼ cup powdered sugar

  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

1. To make the dough: Using a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, combine the flour, sugar, yeast and sea salt. Add in eggs and water while continuing to mix. Once the dough has come together, add in butter and continue to mix.

2. Lightly brush a bowl with canola or vegetable oil. Transfer the dough to this bowl and refrigerate for 12 hours.

3. To make the chocolate filling: Combine chocolate, butter, heavy cream, cocoa powder, powdered sugar and salt in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir together until the chocolate and butter have melted. Set aside to cool.

4. To form the cake: Line a bread pan in oil and parchment paper. Roll out the dough on a floured surface. Spread the chocolate filling across the surface of the dough, then roll up the dough to form the shape of a tube. Slice the tube shape in half, then braid the two halves. Transfer the babka to the bread pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes.
