[This article features spoilers from the first part of Selena: The Series. You’ve been warned!]

After a year of being stuck in quarantine, we have to give Netflix some mad props. It’s been rolling out show after show, and one of its most popular is as grand as the woman who inspired it: Selena: The Series. Telling the story of Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla’s life, the show goes from her rise to stardom until her tragic death in 1995, when she was just 23 years old. As it’s a biographical series, this isn’t the sort of show that can go on indefinitely. But it does mean we still have a lot more ground to cover…and more music to dance along to.

Part two of the series is about to hit the streaming giant on May 4, and we desperately need to know what we can expect, from the fabulous costumes to new characters. Also, can Netflix maybe throw in the inspiration for an iconic tune or two, please? We’d so appreciate it.

Here’s what we know so far:

Let’s play catch-up. What was part 1 about?

If you remember, the first part of the show centered heavily around Selena’s childhood and beginnings as a singer, up until the release of her 1990 album, Ven Conmigo. It also featured her start as the lead singer of the family band, Los Dinos, which meant we got to see all the trials and tribulations her family went through to get on the musical map. Oh, and we can’t forget to mention how we were introduced to Selena’s future husband, drummer Chris Pérez (Jesse Posey), as well.

As Christian Serratos told Good Housekeeping in December 2020, she knew it would be a challenge to play someone who was so loved by her fans, but she was ready to do one of her idols justice.

“Knowing that this woman meant so much to so many people and she has such die-hard fans, including myself, I [felt like I] had a responsibility to them, to her family, to her,” she told the publication. “I just wanted to do a good job and do it as best I could.”

Amazing. What do we know about part 2?

Well, we can expect the show to pick right up from where it left off. Selena’s now a famous singer, and her father/manager, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., wants her to be on her A-game. Unfortunately, there are a lot of distractions keeping the young woman from the goal…including a love affair with Chris, who has just been fired from the family band due to his and Selena’s secret romance. Also, tensions are brewing between family members, and it looks like outsiders are starting to poke their way into personal drama.

Christian also told the Los Angeles Times one thing she insisted on doing this time around, which never happened during part 1: She did her own hair and makeup for each scene.

“Her eyebrows and her eyeliner and her lips were so specific to me,” Christian told the Los Angeles Times. “But every time I did my makeup on-set, it made me feel so much more like her. That started off my day in character, going to work and doing my makeup. For season 2, I was like, ‘I want to do it. Selena did her own makeup; I’m doing my own makeup.’”

Here are some images of Christian’s looks in the upcoming episodes. She needs to teach a master class ASAP.

Wait—I need to know! Who’s expected to come back for part 2?

As the second part of the show will feature Selena’s journey to becoming a crossover artist, it’s likely that the kids portraying the Quintanilla siblings will be featured in flashbacks. In terms of the adults, though, we can expect the entire family back on the screen, including Abraham Quintanilla Jr. (Ricardo Chavira), Marcella Quintanilla (Seidy López), A. B. Quintanilla III (Gabriel Chavarria) and Suzette Quintanilla (Noemi Gonzalez).

In addition to the musical family, we are fully expecting the backup band to be in attendance, including drummer Chris Pérez (Jesse Posey), cowriter and keyboard player Ricky Vela (Hunter Reese Peña), backup singer Pete Astudillo, other keyboard player Joe Ojeda (Carlos Alfredo Jr.), and the president of Selena’s fan club, Yolanda Saldívar (Natasha Perez).

Awesome. Which of Selena’s songs will we be hearing in part 2?

Funny you should ask. Among some of Selena’s other hits, including “Amor Prohibido,” be prepared to get up on your feet and dance to some “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom”!
