Since the news broke last year that Yellowstone—the mega-hit Western drama by Taylor Sheridan—would be ending after the completion of its fifth season this fall, fans have been eagerly looking out for what could come next from the showrunner. While there's no shortage of Dutton-themed prequels and spin-offs in the works, the latest news out of the Sheridan camp suggests there could be an entirely new set of possibilities in the works.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Sheridan and his Bosque Ranch production company have optioned the Pulitzer finalist book Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History by S.C. Gwynne. Though there's been no news thus far as to what form the book could be adapted into, Deadline reports that Sheridan and Jenny Wood will produce the project.

Taking place over four decades, the book focuses on Chief Quanah Parker and the Comanche tribe's struggles as Westward Expansion brought white settlers to their lands in the late 1800s. The son of Cynthia Ann Parker, who was kidnapped as a young girl and grew up among the tribe, Quanah went on to become known as an undefeated warrior and one of the tribe's greatest chiefs, waging a guerrilla war against the continued expansion of white settlement onto Comanche lands.

"I can’t think of anyone better qualified to bring Empire of the Summer Moon to the screen than Taylor Sheridan," Gwynne said when the option was announced. "He has a deep and nuanced understanding of both the myth and reality of the Old West. I am thrilled that he is undertaking this project."

As yet, no other details about the project or its timeline have been released, but we will continue to update this story as new information becomes available.
