Kevin Costner's western series Yellowstone is back for a fifth season–and it's stronger than ever.

The brand new episode of the Paramount Network show, aired last Sunday (November 13) in the US, brought in a total of 12.1 million viewers. This figure indicates those who have watched the two-hour premiere live or on the day it was released, as Entertainment Weekly reports.

The show opened at 8.8 million viewers during its first airing on Paramount, with more fans tuning in on other channels via simulcast and encore telecasts on the day.

For comparison, the fourth season finale pulled in more than 11 million viewers across first and simulcast airings, meaning that the show's viewership has increased by 1 million.

Data also shows that Yellowstone is now attracting younger demographics, which would explain the spike in viewers. The series boasts an increase of 53% among viewers aged 18-34, 25% among those 18-49 and 15% in the 25-54 age group.

In the season premiere, Costner's John Dutton is sworn in as governor, with his daughter Beth (Sherlock Holmes' Kelly Reilly) adjusting to her new role as his chief of staff.

The episode also includes a tragic twist with Monica's (Fargo's Kelsey Asbille) storyline. Kayce's (Luke Grimes) wife has early contractions and rushes to the hospital with her son Tate (Brecken Merrill) as her husband is away, but has a car accident and ends up losing her baby.

Off the back of the main show's success, Yellowstone has three sister series in production: prequel 1883, which premiered last year, as well as 1923, set to debut on Paramount+ this December, and present-day-set spinoff 6666, slated for a 2023 release.
