We're warning you now, Yellowstone fans: You're not going to like the update actor Gil Birmingham just gave us about season 5.

Ever since the Paramount Network's hit drama had its season 4 finale on January 2, fans have been wondering when they'd get to see John (Kevin Costner), Rip (Cole Hauser), Beth (Kelly Reilly), Jamie (Wes Bentley) and the rest of the characters back in action. According to Gil, that might be a while yet — in fact, it sounds like the cast hasn't really dove back into the series at all.

"We haven't even gotten the scripts yet," Gil told E! News on April 27 while doing a joint interview with his Under the Banner of Heaven costar Andrew Garfield. Andrew further confirmed this Yellowstone update to be true: "I know he's about to do the next season, but he's not allowed to speak. On pain of death, he will not reveal anything about the new season."

In short, this means that fans shouldn't expect to see new season 5 episodes for quite some time. This isn't exactly welcoming news, especially considering how long fans had to wait for season 4 to come out due to scheduling changes from Paramount. While the first three seasons of Yellowstone were released in late June, season 4 didn't start airing until November of 2021.

But now for the good news — assuming the show doesn't get behind on schedule, Deadline reported back in February that the cast and crew is set to start filming in May. That would put new episodes to be released in the fall of 2022.

That same Deadline report also revealed that actors Jen Landon and Kathryn Kelly, who play Teeter and Emily respectively, are being promoted to series regulars for season 5. Jefferson White is also returning to the show as Jimmy.

That's what we know for now – here's to hoping the next update we receive will be a better one for fans.
