'Yellowstone' Fans Have a Sad Theory About Beth Dutton's Fate in Season 4

From Good Housekeeping

  • In the season 3 finale of Yellowstone, a bomb exploded in Beth Dutton's office.

  • Ever since, fans have been wondering if this is a sign that Kelly Reilly is leaving the show.

  • A recent theory on Reddit suggests that she may survive, but she may have a tough road ahead in season 4.

Yellowstone fans are begging for answers.

During August's season 3 finale, fans were left with a major cliffhanger after a bomb exploded in Beth's office, gunmen stormed Kayce's office, and John was shot helping a stranger on the side of the road. In the months since, fans have been plotting theories about which Dutton (if any) will make it out alive, leaving many to ask if Kelly Reilly (who plays Beth), Kevin Costner (who plays John), and Luke Grimes (who plays Kayce) will be a part of the fourth season.

The more time that passes, the more theories pop up. The latest theory on Reddit is focused solely on Beth's fate: One Reddit user believes that the steadiness in Beth and Rip's relationship throughout season 3 may have been a sign all along that there was a tragedy on the horizon. "The fact that the writers sort of accelerated the love story between her and Rip in season 3 seems like a very deliberate choice to make her potential death hurt more ... and like they wanted to give the fans everything they've been waiting for (with Rip) before they take it all away," they wrote.

Then there's the fact that Kelly has been very quiet about Yellowstone since season 3 aired unlike some of her co-stars (Rip included) who have posted photos of filming on set. "She may be hiding out as far as being spotted filming on purpose to make fans think. It would be a total shame to kill her off, not to mention a huge set of shoes to fill," another fan commented.

Previously, the show's creator has mentioned that he knows exactly how and when the show will end, hinting that it won't go beyond six seasons. Since the show is now at the halfway mark, it might be the perfect time for a switch-up a.k.a. a major character's death. "Once that story is told, the show is over. Anyway, that would be the only reason that I would think that they would kill someone like Beth off, because she is such a major character," read one comment. Her death would be a "huge blow to the family storyline," which, let's face it, is dramatic as ever right now.

By the looks of it, most fans still argue that Beth will be featured on season 4 in one way or another. There's the obvious possibility that she may spend most of the season recovering from the aftermath of the bombing, perhaps with some uncertainty about whether or not she'll pull through. "I think she'll survive, and predict that the season opens up with Rip placing his dead mother's ring on Beth's hand while she's in a coma," one fan wrote, connecting the scene where Rip took his mother's ring off her hand at the end of season 3.

All eyes may be on the Dutton trio, but fans also have their doubts about some other characters on the show. Jimmy suffered a dangerous fall earlier on in season 3, and with his luck, there's a chance that another round in the rodeo may finish him. "They were similarly making Jimmy’s life seem better with his new (girlfriend), only to kill him off as soon as he starts to find happiness," someone commented.

Other characters, who aren't as central to the show as Beth, John, and Kayce, may not be as lucky: "Anyone else (including Rainwater) could die, because they could be replaced by someone similar — another tribe Chairman, another wife for Kayce, another Bunkhouse clown," one fan wrote. They even used what happened to Dan Jenkins as an example: He was killed in the season 2 finale and quickly replaced by Roarke Morris in the following season.
