'Yellowstone' Fans are Officially Fed Up After "Disappointing" Mid-Season Finale

Yellowstone fans are used to explosive season finales, sometimes with the lives of several main characters left hanging in the balance. So it's understandable that the season 5 mid-season finale left viewers feeling a bit underwhelmed. Aside from the major development in the Jamie vs. Beth battle, it was a bit of a slow burn, with a visit to the 6666, a flashback to Rip's branding, and Kayce (Luke Grimes) taking over the ranch.

Kayce Takes the Reins

John Dutton (Kevin Costner) talks to Monica (Kelsey Asbille) about Kayce taking over the ranch in Rip's absence (John recognizes she "wears the pants" in their relationship). John explains that he'd like their son Tate to take over the ranch some day, and "The ranch can’t be Tate’s someday if the ranch isn’t here." Monica also takes John's offer of living back on the ranch in East Camp, a house that offers their family a fresh start.

The episode takes a long visit to the 6666 ranch, where Jimmy Hurdstram (Jefferson White) cozies up with his girlfriend Emily (Kathryn Kelly) and seems to fit right in with his new crew. This interlude begs the question: When will we see the long-promised 6666 spinoff?

Jamie Puts His Cards on the Table

John shows his support for the efforts of Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) to stop the proposed pipeline that will run beneath the reservation, At the statehouse, Jamie (Wes Bentley) addresses the legislature. He claims that in canceling funding for the airport, Governor Dutton violated state law and robbed the state of jobs and taxes and threatens to extinguish the biggest source of revenue, tourism. He formally requested a senate tribunal seeking impeachment, and the request was approved.

Beth Finds Out the Family Secret

After confronting Jamie about calling for their father's impeachment, Jamie tells Beth about the train station, and she confronts John about it. John lays out the details to Beth: "It's a trash can for everyone who has attacked us that lays in a jurisdictional dead zone in a county with a population of exactly zero, hence no jury of your peers and no court for a change in venue. Why are you so surprised?"

Beth, who has acted as the Dutton family mastermind, somehow finds all of this shocking, yet is quick to point to a solution: "I think that’s the place for Jamie. What do you think, Daddy?" After all, Jamie knows about the train station and will do anything to stop John. Jamie, in turn, confers with Sarah about setting up a similar end to Beth. All of this leads up to a conclusion to the Jamie vs. Beth battle that has been brewing since last season. But first, we wait until the show returns.

Up Next...a Long Wait

At the end of the mid-season finale, Paramount Network dropped a bomb about the show's return. Viewers will have to wait until Summer 2023 for more Yellowstone. Fans took to Instagram to voice their opinions about the show.

  • "Worst episode yet and this is the mid season finale?"

  • "I’m gonna stick it through to the end of this season but if it continues to go downhill then I’m calling it quits for Yellowstone!"

  • "Such a boring episode. There was no big cliff hanger"

  • "I think Yellowstone has sadly run out of story. Very disappointing- lots of filler, minimal plot points and no cliffhanger? Topped off by no more episodes til summer! What a letdown. Well, they had a good run for awhile🤷♀️"

  • "This show has lost its fire 🔥 😕"

  • "I expected so much more."

Previous seasons have begun around Father's Day, so we'll be looking toward a June return of the most-watched show on TV. That's certainly a long time to wait to find out if Jamie is heading to the train station, or if Beth will meet her end.
