'Yellowstone' Fans Just Pointed Out a Major Plot Hole Ahead of the Season 4 Release

  • While they wait for the season 4 premiere, some Yellowstone fans are revisiting older episodes to piece together clues about what's ahead.

  • An eagle-eyed fan noticed that Lee Dutton, the oldest of the Dutton siblings, has been noticeably absent from the family's flashback photos.

  • Some think we may get answers about this in season 4, but others assume this is just a production error.

Yellowstone fans are desperate for answers. While they eagerly wait for Paramount Network to announce the season 4 premiere date, fans are killing time by digging deeper into the Dutton family's past, present and future. Along the way, some have picked up a major error surrounding Lee Dutton's (Dave Annable) storyline.

During the very first episode of Yellowstone, we learn that John Dutton (Kevin Costner) actually had four children, but his oldest son, Lee, was shot and killed during a failed mission to take back cattle that had been stolen the Broken Rock Reservation. In the time since, we've seen glimmers of Lee here and there, mainly in flashback scenes with Kayce (Luke Grimes), Jamie (Wes Bentley) and Beth (Kelly Reilly).

But recently, one eagle-eyed fan on Reddit realized that Lee was actually absent from a number of flashback scenes when his character was still very much alive. For example, they pointed out several instances when they showed family photos in earlier seasons and Lee was nowhere to be found. Some fans have a far-fetched theory that Lee was the person behind the camera, but other have chalked it up to "sloppy writing."

Another fan pointed out that the photos shown appear to have some greater significance, which means there may be more to Lee's absence than meets the eye. John frequently looks at one of the framed photos and there's another black-and-white version in Beth's room. "She takes it down and Jamie puts it back up. They make it a point to see it," the fan wrote. Perhaps this is one of the show's best-kept secrets and we'll learn more in the episodes to come. "Maybe there is more to Lee’s story. Took three seasons for us to learn that Jamie wasn’t John’s son," another fan commented.

Dave Annable, who plays Lee, hasn't mentioned a return to Dutton Ranch, but it's still possible that his character will appear. Aside from promoting the show's Memorial Day marathon, the last time the actor posted about Yellowstone was on the day of the season 2 premiere, joking he's "not sure how the show made it to a season 2 with its biggest name being offed in the first episode."

A few fans, however, are hopeful that the actor's Instagram post about "going back to work" may be a hint that he's returning the show in some way, especially since he used a cowboy hat emoji. "Are you coming back to Yellowstone as a flashback!???,," one fan asked. "Flashback to show that you have a son," another chimed in.

We'll have to wait and see!
