Each year, the Golden Globes recognizes the top movies and TV shows that were released over the year. When the nominees were announced for the 81st annual event, fans of Yellowstone were surprised to see the show left off the list. Although the series has been one of the most-watched shows over its run, that success has not translated into awards show wins. In fact, Yellowstone has only received one Golden Globe nomination, and that was for Kevin Costner's portrayal of John Dutton (an award he won in 2023).

But the reason for its omission this year is a bit more complicated: It didn't meet the necessary requirements. The Golden Globes Eligibility Requirements are specific. For a show to be considered, it must have "a total running time of at least 150 program minutes aired during the qualifying year. Each qualifying episode of a television series must be a minimum of twenty (20) program minutes." Viewers of the Dutton family drama will remember that only one episode aired during 2023: "A Knife and No Coin," the mid-season finale of season 5, and the runtime fell short of the 150-minute requirement.

It's not all bad news for fans of the Yellowstone universe! The popular prequel, 1923, received two nominations: Best Drama Series and Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series, Drama, for Helen Mirren, who has won three Golden Globe awards over the course of her storied career. David Oyelowo, star of Taylor Sheridan's Lawmen: Bass Reeves, also received a nomination for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television.

We'll be cheering them on and hoping the final season of Yellowstone gets some well-deserved recognition. The 81st annual Golden Globes airs Sunday, January 7, at 8 p.m. EST/7 p.m. CST. on CBS and Paramount+.
