What do you get when you combine a highly-anticipated Netflix movie with a Y2K-inspired jewelry brand? A collection of bewitchingly cute accessories that are too cute to resist.

BONBONWHIMS — the whimsical jewelry brand that has quickly garnered cult status, counting celebrities like Ariana Grande, Kylie Jenner, Doja Cat, and Gigi Hadid as fans — has announced it's teaming up with School for Good and Evil for an exclusive collection. The movie is based on Soman Chainani’s New York Times bestselling novel and follows characters Sophie and Agatha (played by Sophia Anne Caruso and Sofia Wylie) as they enter the mystical School For Good And Evil (hence the title). Naturally, it was the perfect source of inspiration for designer Clare Ngai, who created a line full of dark gems, crystals, and pearls that play into the fairytale and fantasy of the film.

“When I first did my research on the story and its characters, I was excited to learn that the film celebrates fantasy, magic, identity, and diversity — everything that resonates with me on a personal level,” Ngai tells InStyle about the inspiration behind the pieces. “As the title suggests, there’s a lot of interpretation of duality in the book, so during the design process, we tried to embrace all these elements and convey the intricate parts of 'good' and 'evil' via different designs, colors, and materials.”

The result was five different styles, including gorgeous pearl necklaces and chunky rings with dark stones, all of which create a synergy between the good and evil energies while staying true to the brand’s Y2K aesthetic.

“I referenced the costume and set designs, such as the ‘Beautification Room,’ a lot for inspiration when designing," says Ngai. "I was drawn to the opulent and decadent looks worn by the two leads, Sophia and Sofia.”

Fun fact: while many notable names appear in the Netflix film — including Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington, and Michelle Yeo — it was especially thrilling for Ngai to work with Caruso, who was already a fan of BONBONWHIMS. The two recently ran into each other at a Fashion Week party, where they finally got to meet in person.

Something else that might temp you to shop BONBONWHIMS x The School for Good and Evil? Ngai made it her mission to create upcycled designs when possible — meaning there's a limited supply of some of the items.

“Right before designing this capsule, I came across a limited batch of rare dead-stock black heart charms from a vintage dealer we work with for many up-cycled designs," she tells us. "Upon learning we’d be collaborating with Netflix, we knew we had to incorporate these one-of-a-kind charms into the collection right away. We created the ‘Heartbreaker’ ring as a result — and it’s now become a Netflix Shop exclusive because of how limited it is; we don’t even have them on our site."

To bring even more stories into pieces, Ngai recalls meeting with the book's author, which eventually led to Chainani writing short stories for each of the baubles in the collection.

“To my pleasant surprise, when Chainani saw the prototypes I had with me, he loved them so much and offered to write these beautiful short stories for each jewelry piece," says Ngai. "They are all so special and provide incredible context and history to the collection — it’s a real treat that customers will get to receive these beautifully designed and collectible story card inserts to go along with their purchase.”

Although it's hard for the designer to choose a favorite from the collection, when asked, she says it's the Ever Never Ring, which is actually a spin-off of BONBONWHIMS's iconic Ling Bling Ring.

“It features two stunning heart-shaped crystals, one in clear and one in ruby, representing the duality of 'good' and 'evil.' The ring is also adjustable, so it’s the perfect gift for your loved ones as it takes most of the sizing guesswork out of the equation.”

Ahead, look at all of the mystical pieces from the collection, which retail for $60 to $158 and will be available on Netflix Shop and bonbonwhims.com.
