WWD China to Launch a Digital-Only Fashion Week In Light of Coronavirus

The novel coronavirus has already caused huge ripples in the fashion and beauty industries. With stores like Ulta, Glossier, and Sephora either shutting down or limiting services in the wake of the virus’s spread, different sectors of the industry are finding their own solutions to this growing issue. One of those solutions is taking things digital.

WWD China recently announced that it will be launching a six-week campaign focused on sustainability, bringing in experts from the environmental science world and beyond to showcase sustainable styles from designers and over 100 brand partners around the world. Part of this effort is a “Digital Fashion Week” set to begin on April 1, according to reporting from WWD.

The event, organized in partnership with local digital production experts, intends to discuss topics ranging from zero-waste design and supply chain transparency to sustainable innovation and more. It will be streamed live for viewers around the world.

“The current coronavirus crisis is a good time for the industry to reflect,” explained Johannes Neubacher, WWD China’s chief content officer. The resulting summit will be “designed as a solutions-focused conference with companies sharing their strategies, processes, and practices, as well as lessons learned along the way when running a fashion business with environmental and social responsibility in mind,” adds WWD China’s chief executive officer Lena Yang.

While some in the fashion business are finding success in these digital ventures, others are opting to postpone events until the future of the virus’s spread is more certain. BeautyCon, the worldwide annual gathering of beauty and fashion influencers, has decided to reconsider their timing, moving its previously-announced August rollout to December 8 and 9.

In a statement posted to their Instagram, the organizers explained that, “while we are optimistic that COVID-19 will be better understood by summer, many of our partners have been impacted by the delays and closures of their partners throughout Asia and other parts of the world,” noting that all previously purchased tickets will still be valid for the new dates.
