WVU Tech biology students plant a pollinator garden

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — WVU Tech students planted a garden at the Paul Cline Youth Memorial Sports Complex on Monday, April 22, 2024 in hopes of drawing butterflies to the complex.

The project was spearheaded by the Piney Creek Watershed Association and sponsored by Beckley Area Foundation.

WVU Tech students said their professor, Dr. Naresh Ramesh, Ph.D., made the opportunity available to them.

“This is our end-of-the-semester service project,” said WVU Tech organismal biology student Makayleigh Blankenship. “We are planting a pollinator garden, and we actually have a few more plants on the way. We are trying to bring the bees and the pollinators back to this area.”

Blankenship said construction at the complex had depleted pollinators. The goal of the garden is to aid in pollination and to invite people to enjoy the outdoors.
