Sexual assault is an unfortunate reality for WAY too many women in the world. Disturbingly, it happens in virtual reality, too.
Jordan Belamire was using a virtual reality headset to play QuiVr, a game in which players use bows and arrows to hunt zombies, according to the essay she wrote for Medium. While moving through the virtual world, a male player heard her female voice, came up behind her, and began groping her.
“Even when I turned away from him, he chased me around, making grabbing and pinching motions near my chest,” Belamire wrote. “Emboldened, he even shoved his hand toward my virtual crotch and began rubbing.”

Women have been trying to carve out a safe space for themselves in the video game world since it’s inception. This wasn’t lost on Belamire – she’d only been in the game a few minutes before a male player attacked her.
“As VR becomes increasingly real, how do we decide what crosses the line from an annoyance to an actual assault?” Belamire wrote.
“Eventually we’re going to need rules to tame the wild, wild west of VR multi-player,” she continued. “Or is this going to be yet another space that women do not venture into?”
