Viewers and RHOBH cast members included were wondering what’s wrong with Denise Richards after she exhibited some strange behavior as the Real Housewives reunited at dinner which first aired on November 30, 2023; the second half aired on December 6.

Richards joined the show in season 9 and left after season 10 following her alleged affair with Brandi Glanville. In April 2023, she was confirmed to return to season 13 in a guest capacity, revealing to Variety that: “I have filmed some episodes,” she said. “And it’s been fun. And you know, I’m a big fan of the show, so it was fun to go back and film a lot of stuff with them.”

It was so unplanned that even Bravo’s production team had no idea she’d be at a screening hosted by Real Housewife Garcelle Beauvais. “This all just happened recently on the spur of the moment,” Richards said. “I was at her screening as a friend — like a real friend — I didn’t tell anyone I was gonna be there. Production didn’t know. I just showed up, like, for real life, as a real friend in real life.”

Reflecting on her time on the show, she said: “When I left after my second season, I just felt as though some of the women were very toxic and they played so dirty. I understand there has to be drama, but I also think it’s fun to see women having fun, especially this age group.” She continued: “I also think it’s great to show you can have fun,” Richards continued. “But I don’t think it’s a positive message to try and tear people down. You can have your opinions, but don’t try to tear people down. I don’t think it’s right. I mean, that part I don’t like.”

On whether she got or would get sucked into the drama, she replied that what viewers saw is what you get in real life. “I truly was myself on the show. And I think some of the women are different on camera and off camera,” she said, “And I think you know what? Don’t self-produce. Just be yourselves. You get a group of six to eight [to] 10 women together, your drama will come up, authentically. Leave it at that and have fun with it.” But upon her return to season 13, viewers and the cast were left a little flummoxed by her behavior at dinner, leading everyone to wonder what’s wrong with Denise Richards.

Denise Richards hasn’t spoken publicly about what transpired at the RHOBH cannabis dinner, but her “slurred” speech did cause some other cast members to question her behavior, including her croaky voice, which Richards said was due to a “bad cold”.

“Well, I’m high, but I don’t know what she is,” fellow Housewife Erika Jayne said in a confessional. “But she’s on another level.” Cast members Garcelle Beauvais and Dorit Kemsley also said they noticed that Richards was acting differently. “Denise is slurring her words a little bit. Maybe Denise had a drink before she came because she was nervous,” Beauvais said in a confessional. Kemsley added, “I don’t know what Denise is partaking in, but I don’t want some right now.”

In the episode, Richard probed Jayne about how their friendship soured given that they seemingly liked each other in the beginning. “I do have a question for you,” Richards asked across the dinner table. “You and I, the first time I met you, you were so sweet and so lovely, and then a year later, it was a different dynamic.”

Jayne said she didn’t know what Richards was talking about because she “didn’t feel anything personal.” But Richards wasn’t satisfied. “No. You know what I’m talking about,” she replied. “I’m asking you, what did I do to you?” Jayne asked for further clarification, which Richards was happy to provide.

Not only was there discussion among the RHOBH cast, but social media lit up as well. “Denise Richard’s [sic] was a HOT F***ING MESS tonight,” one person tweeted. “I love denise richards… but my sis looks CRAZY,” another wrote. “I think it’s safe to assume that Denise Richards got her pre-party on. I’m fully here for it though,” another observed.

In 2020, Richards faced claimed she was “on drugs” during an episode of the RHOBH when fans were alarmed by her blood-shot eyes. “Was Denise Richards high or had she been crying on the #RHOBHReunion? Her eyes are red,” one viewer noticed. “Denise’s eyes were extremely red and her entire look was crazy. I want to like her but she’s coming off so sloppy,” another speculated.

Such was the frenzy that Richards took to social media herself to explain that she was having an allergic reaction to her makeup. “I am allergic to powder, I’ve tried so many. I hate it. As soon as it’s used on my face, my eyes get bright red immediately. And my nose runs (so lovely). At first, drops help but as the day goes on, nothing does,” she said.

“If anyone knows of a makeup powder that could help please please let me know. On this production in Spain they even had to switch to cream shadows and blotting paper. Any make up artist that has worked with me & still works with me knows this about me & we would love any input on this.” When one fan said they thought Denise was “allergic to the bulls—t” from her cast mates, to which she agreed and said it was “maybe that too.”
