When you've shelled out for a sizable, showstopper gift and managed to hide it strategically somewhere in your home for the entire holiday season, figuring how to wrap this large gift may come as an afterthought. Because there's no universal standard for "large gifts," we've opted to gear the steps and tips in this guide toward rectangular boxes. Keep in mind that depending on the dimensions of your gift, your mileage may vary.

When you're looking for the right wrapping paper for the job, we suggest measuring the total width of your box first, as this alone could use up an entire paper roll. Buy your wrapping paper rolls in multiples to be on the safe side — you can always return unopened extras.

In this tutorial, we're patching up the exposed sides of our large gift with extra paper, adhered with double-sided tape. The purpose of using double-sided tape is to make the patched area less noticeable. Just keep in mind that it's best to stick double-sided tape to your paper, not to the box itself — when it's being unwrapped, the tape may end up ripping the box and marring the gift.

Without further ado, here's how to wrap large gifts.

How to Wrap a Large Gift

Supplies:

  • Wrapping paper

  • Scissors

  • Regular tape

  • Double-sided tape (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Roll out your wrapping paper, then place your large present on top of it. Wrap the paper all the way around the box so that it covers all four sides but leaves the top and bottom uncovered.

  2. Where the paper overlaps, roll out one more inch and cut the paper from the roll.

  3. Make sure the paper is wrapped tightly around the box. Then, tape the paper together.

  4. On one end of the box, fold in the sides of the paper, then fold down the top flap over it. Tape paper in place.

  5. Fold up the bottom flap over the folded sides, then tap paper in place. Note that your paper may not cover the top and bottom of a large present.

  6. Measure out and cut extra paper to completely cover the gaps on the exposed sides. Slide the paper inside of the gap so that the box is now fully covered. Secure it to the outer paper with double-sided tape.

  7. Repeat steps 4-6 on the other side so that your large gift is completely wrapped.
