World's Oldest Dog Sadly Passes Away at the Age of 31

On October 21, Bobi, the Guinness Book of World Record's "World's Oldest Dog" sadly passed away at age 31 and "163" days old.

The record-breaking Portugese mastiff celebrated his 31st birthday this year with a large party in the village of Conqueiros, where over 100 guests attended. One of these guests was veterinarian Dr. Karen Becker, who shared the sad news of Bobi's passing in a sweet tribute on Facebook.

"Last night, this sweet boy earned his wings," Becker wrote in an October 22 Facebook post. "Despite outliving every dog in history, his 11,478 days on earth would never be enough for those who loved him." She continued, "When we asked Leonel what his recipe was for Bobi’s exceptionally long life, his response was swift: “Good nutrition, constant contact with nature, freedom to discover his environment, consistent veterinary care, and love. Bobi knows he’s deeply loved.”

Facebook users are saddened by this news and @Shelia comments, "My sympathy to his family, such a special boy, run free at Rainbow Bridge." @Catherine adds, "Run free at the Bridge Sweetie. Until we all meet again. Prayers for your mom, dad, family and friends." @Lisa responds. "Thank you to Leonel for sharing your beautiful special boy and inspirational messages with dog owners throughout the world. Thank you #foreverdog for sharing Bobi’s story.Sending condolences and doggie hugs."

According to Bobi's owner Leonel, the “calm, peaceful” environment Bobi lived in contributed to his record-breaking age. Additionally, Bobi was never tied up, chained, nor leashed – he always was allowed to free-roam around his yard.

As he advanced in age, Bobi became less mobile, so he spent most of his time in the backyard with his feline friends. Leonel described Bobi as a “very sociable” dog.

Rest in peace, sweet pup.
