  • Rapper Nicki Minaj's mother, Carol Maraj, was recently honored for her charitable work.

  • Maraj used the opportunity to express gratitude for her daughter.

  • She revealed that Nicki had given her mother a house and "many cars" over the years.

Most of us are familiar with Nicki Minaj, the singer, rapper, and actress (we have not forgotten about Ice Age: Continental Drift and Barbershop: The Next Cut) who has managed to emerge as the standout star of every track she was ever featured on.

But the modern music icon has been sharing the spotlight lately as more and more of the public recognizes her mother, Carol Maraj. An activist and a musician in her own right, Maraj's work with the Carol Maraj Foundation, founded in 2013, was honored by the Women Who Influence’s Pink Apple Brunch & Awards earlier this week.

Maraj spoke to Page Six in the wake of her most recent honor and reflected on her life, raising her famous daughter, and the gifts of gratitude Minaj furnished on her mother after fame came for the "Super Bass" performer.

"She has bought me a Mercedes-Benz. She bought me a beautiful home, and many different cars," Maraj told the publication. Indeed, the rapper mentioned one of those purchases in a lyric of 2010's "I'm the Best," from her debut studio album Pink Friday: "I remember when I couldn’t buy my mother a couch/ Now I’m sittin’ at the closin’ bought my mother a house."

Maraj also reflected on the successes both she and her daughter have achieved after moving to the U.S. from Trinidad when the latter was 5 years old:

"I never expected this, raising my children here in the States, that my daughter would become this big superstar. I love that my daughter is so successful, and glad that she has a platform — but I have my own passion and drive. It’s really nice to know that I’m different."

Page Six's story also notes a new venture in the works for Maraj: a fragrance named "Heaven Scent."
