The World's 50 Best Restaurants Were Just Announced—Here's Where Foodies Should Book a Table This Year
Park lovers collect National Park stamps. Wine aficionados collect bottles. And foodies have a whole bunch of deliciousness to collect during their travels.
Often, diners study the James Beard Awards and the Michelin Guide (and book trips and tables accordingly). Globe-trotters, however, turn to The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. Each year, a group of more than 1,000 journalists and chefs rank their favorites to be considered as the best of the best.
Recently, the organization has been under fire for allowing winners to dominate the top slot (2021’s #1, Noma in Copenhagen, occupied that position in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, too). There have also been accusations of sexism and some major gaps that help to showcase the real breadth and depth of the global dining scene. (The vast majority of the top 50 restaurants in the past have been owned by males and the list leans Euro-centric, critics say.) So this year, the voting body and rules were given an extreme makeover.
Yesterday, Stanley Tucci announced the 2022 winners in a ceremony in London. Beyond the top 50 spots themselves, the voting body celebrates a handful of top hospitality professionals. The 2022 winners include:
World’s Best Pastry Chef: René Frank of Coda in Berlin, Germany
World’s Best Female Chef: Leonor Espinosa of Leo in Bogotá, Colombia
World’s Best Sommelier: Josep Roca of El Celler de Can Roca, Girona, Spain
The Art of Hospitality Award: Atomix in New York City
Sustainable Restaurant Award: Aponiente in El Puerto de Santa María, Spain
Icon Award: Wawira Njiru of Food for Education in Nairobi, Kenya
This year’s World’s 50 Best Restaurant victor, Geranium in Copenhagen, was last year’s runner-up on the Best 50 list. That made it the favorite to secure the top spot after the recent rule change. But Denmark isn’t the only location that made the list!
