There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determined that, in fact, they really do.

On Trial: Purple's Royal Seat Cushion

Tester: Bridget Clegg, who has been working at her kitchen table on top of two throw pillows for the past 4 months

The Brief: While a standing or treadmill desk may be healthiest, my work-from-home reality is that I'm sitting at my kitchen table for 8 hours every day. I love being close to the La Croix stash, but the straight-backed wooden chair I'm sitting on is a literal pain in my butt. For a few months, I tried stacking two couch pillows on the chair, but I ended up with feather shafts poking into my legs and the regret of not having washable pillow covers.

Purple is known for its mattresses that are made from an innovative stretchy polymer that gives buoyant support and distributes weight evenly. The brand's seat cushions are made from the same innovative material and come with washable zippered covers. After first trying out the massive Ultimate Cushion and not having a chair big enough to use it on (apparently it's great for gamers and truck drivers!), I landed on the Royal for my everyday use.

Weighing in at 5 pounds and fitting perfectly atop the seat of my unforgiving wooden chair with 2 inches of much-needed cushion, the Royal makes my days of working from home infinitely more comfortable. Purple boasts a 5- to 8-hour sit-time with the Royal, and I can confirm: After long, afternoon work sessions, the rubbery cushion remains squishy and firm, leaving a lattice of indents on my thighs but never deflating entirely like my throw pillows did.

In comparison to standard pillow stuffing, the polymer material and grid design makes for a more ventilated experience, which translates to less sweaty-leg suffering for me. The cover is soft jersey on top with a grippy texture on the bottom, and can be thrown in the wash whenever it needs it.

Closing Argument: I have a new workday routine of moving from the kitchen table chair to the couch and then to another rolling chair, and you better believe the Royal comes with me to each new spot. It's a major upgrade from the everyday wooden chair, and I can only dream of its benefits at a crappy office desk, in the car on a road trip, or even on a long flight.
